Title: Breast feeding lowers chances of getting pregnant?

I read this on the web somewhere. I wasn't sure, as I hadn't ever heard that. Has anyone else heard that your chances of becoming pregnant again decrease if you are breast feeding?

I have heard this as well.  However, my girlfriend became pregnant while breastfeeding, so I guess it doesn't work effectively as birth control.

I have heard it also. After the birth of my first daughter, my dr told me that it is not a reliable method of birth control. Instead she prescribed a birth control pill, that I guess wasnt the full dose, and she told me as long as I was breastfeeding and taking that pill it was ok. But as soon as I stopped breastfeading I needed to come in and get a prescription for the regular pill.

When you're breastfeeding, your body usually stops ovulating for a while as a "natural" method of preventing pregnancy (because your body might have a hard time supporting two little ones at the same time).  However, you guys are right in that ovulation can start even while breastfeeding so it's important to take precautions.  I was on the same low dose pill while breastfeeding and when I stopped, my doctor actually said that it was okay for me to stay on it (I wanted to, because it's the first time I didn't have any side effects) but that it wasn't as fool-proof and that it really only lasts for one day so one HAS to take it at the same time everyday.  So far, so good for me!

It may prevent ovulation, but it's a good idea to have a back-up plan, too. However, my theory from personal experience is that it lowers your chances of getting pregnant because after nursing the baby all the time, you're too tired for anything else! LOL.
