I was having this conversation with a few co-workers. One of them got their son a webcam for Christmas. Do you think this is a safe gift? Has anyone ever gotten one of these for their kids?

What would you do with a webcam? I could see if it was in an open area, it should probably be ok. I wanted to see what everyone else thought.

I personally dont think its a good idea. I dont have one at all even for myself. I think it is only permoting sexual encounters.



 

wow ppl still use web cams i havent used one in ages. i think it would be ok if he wasnt locked away in his bedroom with it, web cams can be fun just to goof around with your friends or record silly videos. we used to turn ours on when we were playing dance dance revolution our friends had a great time watching ,this was before most ppl knew what it was.

Yeah, I think it depends on where it's located in the house. If it's in the living room, that's ok. If it's in their room where they can be along with it, probably not.

I agree. In an opened room is ok, but no where private!!

My In Laws gave us one years ago.  They wanted to be able to see their grandchildren. (They live out of the country)  It never really worked well, so we haven't used it in several years.  Technology has come along way since then, and as a gift for a teenager, I agree with those whom have already posted, that it should be in an open shared space.  I just recently watched a news program that showed what teenagers are doing with webcams, and my daughter (almost 15) will NOT be getting one anytime soon!  Heck, she isn't even allowed on the computer...she is a really great kid, but I guess I am soooo over protective.

I work for online everyday with my job and all webcams are used for is sexual i dont care what anyone says!!!

 

 

 

Personally, it is a very bad gift -- too many temptations for any age of child these days and you do not know who is "really " on the other side these days either!!

 My daughter is 18 and addicted to facebook -- just like MY SPACE and we are having major problems with that.  Thank God she does not have a web cam.  I would not put fuel in your fire.

I think webcams have a place and a purpous   However   I must overall take the veiw that unless its used in absolutely  carefully watched circumstances   as even when used innocently nuff on one end whats being shown on other to tempt?   I dont think its a safe thing for most teens  as all Ive ever really seen it used for is  sex or spying on girls as they eat undress etc... Now and then Grans get to see kids but not the norm..

Well, my daughter is a little older now from when this question was first posted and my answer would still be the same.  I most certainly would not let her have one and she is a really great kid!

My neighbor's did get one for themselves and their daughter (their daughter is 30) so that they could see  their 1st grandbaby and talk to her every Sunday.  I think for those circumstances a webcam is perfect!  They love seeing her every week(she is just over 2 now), and in just about another week they are going to be Grandparents a second time as their Daughter and SIL welcome another baby girl.  Now they will get to see both of those babies every week!

It depends if the child is mature  enough and out where everyone can see whats going @ all times.

well it just really depends on your teenager, is he/she ready for one, what are they going to be using it for?

I feel that if the teen is ready and if they do not use it in an unappropriate way then yah why not.
