Title: Kids riding bikes to school
Posted: 2 yearss ago

I live very close to a school. I see very young kids riding their bikes to school all the time. I get a little worried, as they don't always watch out for themselves out there. At what age do you think a child is old enough to ride their bikes to school?

I have no idea at what age..because I have always brought my son to school...I have let him walk to school twice and both where with a friend of mine that was walking her kids.   We go to a school now that is 30 minutes from the house so I have to drive now.  But when it was right around the block.......I couldn't do it.......It only take a few seconds....People are crazy out in this big world......too crazy for me to chance it.   So I have always driven him to school

I dont know what the right age would be. I guess maybe it depends a lot on the child. For me I wouldnt even consider it until they are at least in 7th or 8th grade, and even then. I would just rather take the time and drive them. There have been a few incidents where some people have approached some children in our neighborhood. The school will send a notice of what happened, and the description of the suspect. I also see a lot of little kids riding and walking to school. They are so little, and dont seem to be able to ride their bike very steady.

I used to ride my bike in the 5th and 6th grade - about 2 miles.

Sure, things were different in the stone age, and I'm a boy, but I don't think that should make a huge difference.  If you can handle  your self and your bike, I'd say 10 is not too early to ride your bike to school.  9 even in some cases.

But only if the child checks out and wants to do it. As a solution to a parent's laziness, it's not cool.  The kid's demeanor will be different if it's their choice, and that difference is important.

It's crazy to think about but I used to walk to school by myself when I was in 2nd grade!!  I think that it was a different time though.  We would also just leave the house and play outside all day long (in various places) and come home when it got dark.  It's crazy how much things have changed.

My brother and I rode our bikes to school when we were in the 4th grade - I believe. We were together, and we had a friend that went to the same school.

It is kinda dangerous today.

Goodness, there are so many factors here!

How far away is the school? How many main roads have to be crossed on the way? Would the child be riding in a group or alone? Maturity level of the child? General safety of the neighborhood/area.

My parents never let me ride my bike to school because it was "too dangerous" but they let me walk to school (and home) by myself in the 2nd grade. Go figure!

I didn't let my son ride his bike to school until last year - 2nd part of 7th grade. It was a judgement call and we did it on a trial basis at first.
