Title: Toddler Seizure
Posted: 2 months ago

My two year old daughter had a seizure Saturday and was in the hospital until today.  All tests showed negative results and she's now on anti-seizure medicine.  I'm a single mom and feeling overwhelmed with fear that it will happen again.  She did not have a fever so I know it wasn't a febral seizure.  Any comforting advice out there?

Did something big hapened to her during the week? I remember one time when I was around 10 my parents were having a fighting. I remember my dad yelling at me so loud it game me a seizure. My mom told me that all she could see was my eyes fliping back and all she was the white part. Due to the seizuer I had my left side of the face paralized for a while. Everytime I get super scared I feel them coming. I don't take anything maybe because its something i have to control. That is the reason why I asked you if something had happened. I think you should just follow your Dr's orders and take care of your baby. We will be praying for you.

My son had many seizures as an infant and had so many big ones that he stopped breathing many times and was in intensive care for a time. However, they put him on medication for a while and then we were able to wean him from the medication and he hasn't had any problems since. I did the same thing when I was small and so did my sister.

It's important to know that the nervous system isn't fully developed until children are older, so small children are more prone to have seizures. Often even they can't find a particular reason for the seizures like any kind of infection or anything, it's just because they are small and their brain isn't fully developed yet. It's also easier for a small child to have a seizure if they have some extra stress or something like that. All of us can have a seizure if we are just under the right conditions and are under enough stress or having temporary trouble that we are dealing with, and just one seizure doesn't mean a long term problem. Just because your daughter had a seizure doesn't mean that she will deal with it through life or anything, although it is possible. Most likely she will just outgrow it, though. So try not to worry about it too much right now and just see how it goes.

Even if she does happen to have a problem for a while, it really is not harmful to have seizures usually. They are very scary to watch and look awful, but they are not usually harmful to someone unless they hit their head or fall or something. As long as you are watching her to make sure she doesn't get hurt, she should be fine. Many people deal with seizures throughout life and live quite a normal life. My dad was on medications for them for many years and never had it really affect him any, just that he had to take medication.

Just wanted to add a couple more things.

It's rare for someone to stop breathing with seizures. It only happened to my son that way because he had many, many seizures in a row that became quite long and he was only a couple of days old and it would make him so tired that he would forget to breathe. So your daughter won't have that happen or anything because she is so much bigger.

If she does happen to have another seizure, don't panic. Just make sure she can't fall or hit her head or anything like that and wait for it to end (waiting is the hard part because it can look scary, even though she'll be fine). Unless the seizure is several minutes long or she seems sick or with a high fever or she has several seizures in a row, you don't need to take her to the hospital. Since she's already on medication and been evaluated, a visit to the doctor in the next couple of days is usually sufficient so that they can reevaluate and possibly up the medication dosage a little bit if they need to.

The nervous system isn't fully developed until around 8 years old. Any kind of seizures before that is usually just something that you will outgrow later.

I hope this helps. I know that a seizure can be scary, but the good thing is that it's not as bad as it looks! Good luck!
