Title: Fear of Dogs
Posted: 3 months ago

N is now five and he has always been terrified of dogs.  He does not like being around them and usally will not go in a house if there is one.  One neighbor is great they put the dog in the kennels when N comes over.

Some people feel like we are "babying" him.  At a family members house I had to pick up to get past the dogs to go to the bathroom- they said if he had to go he should walk past the dogs- I told them then you clean up his pant when he pees.

I try to get him to touch and pet smaller dogs and he will- but my main problem right now is a neighbor- they have their yard fenced in except for a corner, by our house, that fence held up by a cord- the dog has gotten out- mind you this is a HUGE dog.  He comes in our yard- N sees him and YELLS in terror.  I think this neighbor should fix the fence so it doesn't fall.  They try to tell N the dog won't hurt but I myself and fearful of it- it is a big dog and don't feel I can control him.

this is a hard one i have known kids that were fine with dogs then one day they are terrified then they randomly get over it. he will prolly get over it in time but i know it can be annoying. what i do with the birds to get kids less fearful (theres only one i bring out for them) is let the bird nibble on me so they can see it doesnt hurt if that doesnt work i will hold the bird with its head covered so they can touch its back so they are less freaked out about being bit. they all eventually want to hold her and they find her nibbles tickle, they are usally still alittle jumpy if she jumps around.

with dogs they usally get very excited when they see kids and end up running up jumping at them and trying to lick, if you can get an introduction worked out where its alittle more controlled it might help, try getting someone with a smaller dog or even a calm big dog hold the dog (big dog of course would have to be sitting) and cover its head so they cant lick him and he can pet their back then work up from there. the most important thing is you will prolly want a very calm dog that isnt going to jump around and freak him out even more like a old golden or lab.

simon has never had issues with dogs he even learned at a very young age to squat down and put his hand out so they can sniff him, the only problem he has with them is if they dont lick him he wants nothing to do with them hehe.

Yesterday my mom had gone for a walk. She had a puppy following her home. So we have the god right now. I thought it was small but its a big puppy. German Shepard. My four year old would not leave his room because he was scared. He even had nightmares and kept on waking up scared. My dh got mad at me and told me to get rid of the dog. I like the dog always wanted one since I was a kid but love my son also. Im not sure how to help my son to like dogs.

We have a very large dog.  I have always put her away in our laundry room when guests come over.  I don't want anyone to get scared or to be uncomfortable.  I do think that kids eventually overcome their fears, I know I did.

My oldest was afraid of all dogs when she was little, she is now 13 and actually just yesterday she said "remember when i was afraid of dogs?", she said she thinks because she was so little herself she thought even small dogs were huge.  She did get over it eventually on her own when she grew taller than the dogs but no amount of coaxing helped, she just screamed and we had to carry her when a dog was around.  Not the worst thing, you just get to pick them up and hug them more!

I don't think you are babying him at all.  He is afraid of dogs and he can't get over that on his own.  Just be patient and help him along.  he will get there.  you are doing good though.
