Starting Kindergarten

Posted: 2 yearss ago

Kindergarten starts in a week. My daughter has been a pre-school for a year, but still very shy and openly tells me she doesn't want to go. I did open enrollment so she is going to a good school where her best friend from pre-school is going, they didn't get in the same class though Frown

Anyone have tips for a reluctant kid? I tried taking her shopping, ohh - a new bag, new markers, new CLOTHES, and she didn't care. She wants to stay home with me, not an option since I'm a single mom and work full-time. She will have to go to their before/after program, her best friend will be in the after program, but I'm worried about her going early.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks! We've driven over quite a few times, the school isn't open when we are able to go. She thinks it is really cool because it is soo big. Open house is Monday. I wish we could visit daily or at least meet the teacher a couple times. There was no kindergarten round-up this year Frown

My child is starting kindergarten this year also. I am kinda worried she is not ready as in doing what kindergarten kids do. She doesnt know how to write her name, and doesnt know her abc's properly. Is this some things she is going to need to know right off the bat??? Please let me know. All i remember from kindergarten was coloring, painting all day.

Some of the schools here do testing to see where the kids are at. My friend's daughter had to recite/write ABCs, write her name, say address and phone. They didn't ask for any testing where my daughter is going. Might be best to call the school. Mine would not do those things on command, infront of a strange teacher. She would clam-up, sit in my lap, and hug her bunny...

My daughter isn't old enough yet for me to worry about this.  I am however already dreading the day we do pre-school.

This seems almost crazy to me.  I know that alot of kids can probably do this, but to test for it seems like waaay too much pressure for a kindergartener.

In any case, good luck and I hope she loves school when she gets there.

here in ohio the only things you have to know is .... well nothing... they do an assment to see what you know... but if you dont know anything they arent gonna keep you out of school...

here they ask name and address, did a lil physical hieght weight vision screening did a literacy screening to see what upper and lower case the child knew... weaknesses and stengths.

My daughters both got tested, they had to be able to write their first name and say the ABC's and count to 10.  They were fine with that, they were actually reading already but reading is really big in our house.  I would have your daughters at least work on writing there names because that really is something that most schools want them to be able to do.  Start with writing their name down and having them trace it, you would be surprised how quickly they learn!

As far as being nervous about them being scared, just keep encouraging them and don't let on that you are nervous for them.  I was terrified, my girls were ready both academically and socially but I was scared too, I didn't want them to be uncomfortable or scared, I just wanted to make everything comfy and cozy for them.  It's very hard, I know what you are feeling.  The first week of school my youngest didn't want to go back everyday, she got stomach aches and all, but I kept encouraging her and telling her it would get better every day and it did.  It killed me though to see her like that, but you have to believe in them that they will get through it.  It sounds like you are doing all the right things to get her excited about starting school, that's all you can do and just encourage!  We are here to support youu through this!

I think B had to know how to write his name and count objects as well. those are nt to far off from any five yr olds capabilities though. if your child isnt doing it jus twork on it a bit and kid sare like sponges and will pick it up right away.

Here in South DAkota, the testing is just called Kindergarten readiness testing. The kids don't even know they are being tested. They do each thing as games. The kids should know their ABC's, most anyway, how to say them, be able to write, or attempt to write, their first name and count. Maybe work with your children for a few days ahead of time. How old is the child? My son has a July 25th birthday and we chose to keep him out of Kindergarten until the following year, when he turned 6. Good luck.
