Title: Polyhydramnios???
Posted: 5 months ago

Hi Everyone,

I had a doctors appointment yesterday. My doctor measured me and found that at 25.5 weeks I am measuring 30. He said that there seems to be too much fluid around the baby and has ordered an ultrasound as soon as possible. I am wondering if anyone else has experience this and what their out come was? My doctor said that worse case scenerio is that the baby's esophagus hasn't formed properly and isn't swallowing the amniotic fluid that it should be. Excess fluid is also a sign of Gestational Diabetes. Any information you might have is greatly appreciated. I have been reading up on line.

 Thanxs in advance

Courtney

I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy.  They were worried at one point that I didn't have enough amniotic fluid.  So it's not always a cut and dry indicator of things.  If your doctor is really worried about things, he will probably order an ultrasound to take an in depth look.  Remember, with the esophagus thing, he was giving you the worst case scenario to cover his own tush not to freak you out.  Every pregnancy is different and this could just be "one of those things" for you this time around.  Try not to stress out and let us know how things are going.  Good luck.

I agree with the previous comment. Dr's ALWAYS give the worst out of everything. As we say in the EMS field CYA or cover your A**!

I was told when I was pregnant with my son that towards the end of my pregnancy that there might not be enough fluid. Turns out they were wrong. Just a BIG baby!!!

Good Luck!!

My main concern is that the baby is ok! I have been having issues with my doctor from day one of this pregnancy. I don't feel like he cares as much the second time around and that I am shrugged off. I just want to know if this is a serious thing and if I should be worried, ya know. I have also had a feeling that I am 2 weeks further ahead then what he thinks, but he didn't order and ultrasound to confirm dates until i was what he thought was 18 weeks. That alone has driven me nuts!!

Technically, it could be serious.  I just hope you don't get yourself all stressed out until you know for sure.  Stress isn't good for you or the baby.

Is there any chance you could change doctors at this point?  It sounds like you have some legitimate concerns that need to be addressed.  If you can't change, I would go into the next appointment with a list of questions that you demand answers to.  Get yourself organized ahead of time so you don't come off as an emotional mess(which isn't that what all we pregnant ladies are?)  It sounds like you've done some research so you should be able to talk about everything you need to.

Hi There,

The last couple of months have been extremely stressful for me. I am trying to deal with my boyfriend who is extremely controlling. I am wound so tight that I could snap at any point. I just want to enjoy the pregnancy and enjoy the time that I have with my daughter before the baby arrives. It's just been merely impossible. I am hoping that all the stress that I have been under hasn't caused any serious damage to the pregnancy. I have tried explaining it to my bone head boyfriend and he just doesn't get it. I have decided to leave him, its just going to take some time to get there. I have an appointment with a new doctor on August 5th, I am hoping that I can get better answers and feel better with the care that I am going to receive. Thank you for your feed back, I am waiting for the doctors office call back as I have left 2 messages now and missed one of their phone calls.

Good idea about leaving your BF. If you need help in doing so cause your afraid I think there are places that can help you. Are you afraid of what he will do or financial reasons?

Glad to hear you have a new Dr to go to. Always good to have a second opinion.

Hi Keri,

I am not afraid of him, its just getting putting it all on the table. I have never had anyone try to control my life the way he does. He wants to move to Ontario and I do not. I didn't say never, but I want it to be on my terms and after this baby is born. Now with this excess fluid thing I would like to stay put even more, and he just doesn't get that. He wants to leave the beginning of September and I am due the end of October. It's just not fair and he doesn't get it. He has blinders on! I will figure it out, I guess lol. He is 2 years younger then I am and he for some reason thinks he knows it all!! It is always right and his thoughts, opinions and feelings are RIGHT!! If someone thinks differently then he does, they are "stupid". I am done with it all!!

Wow.  All that on top of being pregnant.  Just be careful.  From what you've said, it sounds like he has the capacity to totally freak out.  I hope you have family and friends close to you that you can rely on to help you out as needed.

Keep us updated on your situation with him and the new dr's appointment.  Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I had polyhydramnios with my second also. In my case I was retaining more fluid because he wasn't swallowing at a normal rate because he has a lung problem that they had found in an ultrasound quite a bit earlier on. The doctors were worried about it, but everything was just fine in the end and the excess fluid didn't hurt anything. It can put you at risk for going into labor early or bleeding more afterwards, though. In my case, that didn't happen, but it's possible sometimes.

The main thing was that carrying around that excess fluid made the pregnancy SO much more uncomfortable. As I got farther along it felt like I was going to pop because I was holding in so much fluid, and it made me feel like I was about to give birth when I wasn't. So that last couple of months was so miserable and I had a very hard time getting any sleep because it felt like I had just swallowed about 3 gallons of water all the time. Hopefully you will do better than I did. I don't think it's that miserable for everyone. The good thing about it is that the fluid does usually go down some at a certain point, I think it's around 34 weeks or so.

I am 27 weeks now and I am huge!! I went out for lunch to a chinese restaurant and the waitress asked if I was due any day now! I was like haha nope not until the end of October! Then she was like oh are you having twins? Again I was like no lol. I have an ultrasound on Thursday to see whats up. I am soo miserable this pregnancy, I don't get any sleep cause I am huge lol. I wake up everytime I flip myself over lol. I don't have any clothes that fit at this point. I thought for a while there that I had gestational diabetes and nope, I passed just fine the first time. Thank you so much everyone for your replies it helps alot!

You were saying that they caught a lung problem early on in the pregnancy?? My doctor said that worse case scenerio the babies esophagus hasn't formed properly so it is not swallowing the amniotic fluid it should. Wouldn't that have been detected earlier on as well??

I don't know anything about the esophagus so I can't tell you about that.

What I do know, though, is that two-thirds of the time there is no apparent reason for having the excess fluid and the baby is perfectly healthy. And then most of the time in the one-third of the time that the baby has a problem, it's diabetes with the mother. So if you don't have diabetes and there's nothing else specific that they have found already, then there probably isn't a real reason for it and your baby should be just fine. I guess I'm just trying to say, try not to panic about it and don't worry!
