Title: Student and School Bus driver in a brawl
Posted: 9 months ago

Recently there was an incident involving a High school girl and a school bus driver. The girl was talking quite loudly on the school bus after school and was not minding the bus driver. The driver told the girl to be quiet cause she couldnt hear the traffic and so forth. But the girl started a bunch of crap. In the end they might end up charging everyone with a crime.  Read the story and watch the video.

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/109599 ...

I use to be a school bus driver for 4 years and I have had some issues with unruley kids.  What do you all think? What would you do as a parent if you heard your child was acting this way? For me Id kill both my kids.

Interesting topic.

I hope my kids never act like that.  When situations get that bad though everyones at fault though.  First the girl should of sat down and been quiet- she needed to listen to the bus driver and what she had to say- The bus driver crossed the line when she touched the girl, I can imagine it is hard to stay calm in a situation like that.  If she kept her cool and took her issues to the school told the proper authorities it would have been different.  I think it is important to teach our kids to respect their elders.  If they disagree, they listen then they need to tell  their parents to be dealt with properly.

WOW    Good Share Keri and great questions....... I was a Bus Monitor in Italy   required monitors on all school busses  which Ive pushed for in all my kids stateside schools.   Drivers have a tremendous responsability  to focus on the road and any hazzards  and are often danmed  whatever they do or dont do .... Yet ALWAYS held accountable . Had she allowed teen off bus and  girl injured shed hasve been responsable  and now shes  in jeapordy   for   holding girl on... while I dont advocate  the Initial " Putting hands on girl to urge her back to seat..( I think better to have simply blocked door w body.  or block aisle ... and cept for calling  help  refrained from responding to tantrum would have been more appropriate ) I only saw trying to  guide girl back to seat  and   Firm pushing AWAY from door  till girl hit her  ...some things at  front  were unclear   as not in good veiw of camera ... it did not appear she had punched girl  by all appearences...tho was a noise . She didnt have to take phone either... simply said she could not talk  at that time ...   Had she taken phone  to talk to parent   she wouldve been distracted or gotten  into  verbal  w parent as well as she had to abide by guidlines  for help   which wasnt sent  fast enough... HAD THE TEEN SAT BACK DOWN   while still protesting and shown a tad of respect  for authority of adult    driver could  have ignored  the mouth.  It appears to me this girl was a problem rider  and driver  did what she thought best. I DO honestly recall stories my kids had for me  to  driver errors also  and many times we drove em to and from even in elementary where possable.

As a parent  had my teens been guilty of such  blatant challenge of authority  there would have been  some strong consequences  for them ... And they knew this ..   However , I think as a mom, especially a Reactive one at that time in particular... Had my kids called me  w such a statement  both Gar and I Would have been to that bus so fast  your heads wouldve spun .  However , while I may have gone off  a bit on seeing video  but on Both driver and my kids. I tried to listen to both sides where my girls were involved. Now my only question is  why arent videos on during course of ENTIRE run from time driver  leaves station to returns Empty bus That would help clarify alot for students and drivers .. and help could be sent  at first signs of trouble.

When   my kids decided  riding school busses way to confrontational  for fellow students and drivers   and chose to walk  or utilize city buses   I WE allowed as I knew from grade /middle school  monitor expieriences my children were responsable and  old enuff to walk to closer schools and ride transit . They were much happier  for the expierience once freed from school busses .

Its gonna be interesting to see what happens w this case.

I understand what this girl did was totally wrong, however no adult has any right to put their hands on someone elses kid(s).  Even though she did not hit her, she did grab her - not cool.  Trust me I think the girl is out of line - where is the respect for the adult.  I would be mortified if that was my daughter.  However, I understand the bus drivers daughter coming to her defense, but when she did that, she made bodily contact, which is wrong, same with friends.

All should be charged - whether disorderly conduct or battery - they are all at fault, as bodily contact was made by all.

What I Bitch!! This girl is being driven by a person who is trying to get them to theyr destination safe. This girl should just have sat down on her butt and stay quiet. The bus driver was doing her job and for her too listen to crap from rude people is not a safe drive. I know that she put her hands on this stupid girl but the girl was not coaperating at all. As far as the daughter helping I think she was in her rights because through all the arguments she stayed quiet and let her mom handle it on her own, but then she saw that the stupid punk started to push and shove up to the point where it became a fight ofcourse she was going to get involved!! Do you think she should have just kick back and watch her mom being slaped around? I think not. I really hope this incident gets solved because as far as I saw the bus driver lady was trying to do her job and the stupid ingnorant bratt was trying too get her way.

Police specify charges in Higley bus brawl

By Emily Gersema
The Arizona Republic
Feb. 24, 2008 01:52 PM

A Gilbert school bus driver and three teens whose fight was captured on a bus videotape and made national headlines will each face a charge of disorderly conduct if Maricopa County prosecutors act on a recommendation by police.

Gilbert police announced Friday evening that they suggest a single count of aggravated assault also be filed against the Higley Unified School District driver, 54-year-old Kim Sullivan, and against the teen who demanded to be let off the school bus, 15-year-old Samantha Taylor.

The bus driver's daughter, Erin Sullivan, 16, jumped in when her mother and Samantha began pushing and yelling at each other in the bus aisle near the driver's seat, the bus security video shows. She began pulling Samantha's hair and head back. Then, she yelled at her mother to get off of Samantha.
Cassandra Schlosser, 14, had been standing behind Samantha in the aisle as she and the driver were arguing. She also had demanded that Sullivan let her off the bus.

The video, released by police Thursday, shows the disagreement had escalated over the course of 15 minutes.

The ride started with Samantha pretending not to be on the list of authorized passengers. Then she and Sullivan were both verbally combative. The situation intensified after Sullivan pulled the bus over and asked Samantha, "Why are you on this bus?" and suggests that she "find another way" to get to and from school.

A boy on the bus called 911 after the two began pulling each other's hair and pushing one another.

Higley officials sent a letter home to parents Wednesday afternoon saying that they are conducting their own investigation to determine what disciplinary measures to take.

Denise Birdwell, an HUSD assistant superintendent in charge of human resources, has said that drivers are not allowed to let students off at unauthorized stops to ensure students get home and to school safely.

here is all i have to say, since when is it ever ok for an adult to put there hands on yojr kid. that girl didn't touch that bus driver first she tried to get passed to get off the bus. that driver time after time touched that girl . that is a boundary that should never be crossed. i think every one is focusing on that girl and ignoring what the driver did. if the driver had a problem she should have turned the girl into the school the following school day with the tape. and since she didn't even turn the camera on til this part.  if i would have been that samantha i would have knocked the bus driver out. there. my mom is wrong on what i would have done. and if i were the parents of that samantha. i would be chaging that driver with battery. got that. focus is on the wrong person. that bus driver did the wrong thing from the start. and over the girl pretending she wasn't supposed to be on the bus. wow. the girl is a kid.

There's fault on both sides of the issue.  Yes, the driver should not have touched the girl.  But I imagine that she felt she had no other choice as the girl was trying to exit and the driver could not let her off there.  But the girl was the root of the problem.  I think the whole episode is a sad commentary on our society.  Kids today aren't raised with any manners or respect for others.  There are a lot of issues that go into that, media, video games, peer pressure... but the basis of the way kids are raised starts at home.  If this girl had been taught any sort of consideration for others, this would not have happened.  The police are doing the right thing by charging everyone involved.

Sammiyou were a sweet obediant ,PEACEMAKING person till the day you punched A in high school after much taunting from her, after which a  lil hellion was born. ( Youeven   got understanding from me WHY you felt like tho  Not for actually doing  For that you Did get consequences... )You still managed to keep it leashed till you were of age  . And youve done good overall blending the well behaved well mannered lil girl you were w the passionate  testy  Tuffy  stage you went thru once  u turned 18 lol ... But !!!! I Do stand on  you DID know enuff to sit down and come home to tell all.rather than fight adults...  You were polite and  most peeps loved you to pieces .You were a Peacemaker Not a troublemaker in school ...I recall a few situations where you were mad at adults ...and felt you were wronged  and daddy and I went to those adults  WITH you  to get to bottom of things  and we dealt accordingly.  That girl WAS IN THE THE WRONG  and while as OF AGE person you may have let it rip , I can say HONESTLY Id have been FURIOUS and SHOCKED  with you or KK for DISOBEDIANT  blatant Poddy mouth behaviour .. That Sam was Smiling as she played to camera along w her friend  Loving the whole scene. The driver  Had to  keep girl at least in  the aisle  AWAY from drivers area and door. Only authorized peeps could escort her off and  Honestly   touching was inevitable ....I Do AGREE      The Fight was WRONG PERIOD !!!!!!  And I would DEFINATELY have issues w driver over that part , and I Could see you Or sissy doing exactly as her daughter did if your momma was  threatened.  And Furious for not talkin to me had I been parent called....    . I love you  but I Did know you would not have behaved as that girl did You Hated kids acted like that and still do...  Sad sad sad  thats how it is today.

And  I still want to know why assist wasnt sent sooner. If superviser was stuck  police should have been sent .

Since I was a bus driver we were told that IF and only IF the student struck us, pushed us or otherwise assaulted us then we could put our hands on the child to protect ourselves. The one girl that came up to defend the driver was the drivers daughter. That driver did call for help multiple times but it took them probably what seemed like forever to get there. That girl was not allowed to exit the bus cause she was not at her proper stop nor at school. If something was to happen to that girl after she gets off that bus like being struck by a car or kidnapped WHO gets sued?! The bus driver and school district.

When I drove and the kids got too loud or rowdy I pulled my bus over to a safe location and sat until the kids quieted down. Yes, I did it even in the summer heat too. The got real quiet real fast after that. I may have been the meanest bus driver out there but my kids got home or to school alive. If those kids got to loud and the driver cant hear the traffic for emergency vehicles or even an approching train that puts them at risk.

I have had only twice ever put my hands on a child but ONLY to save thier lives. I was letting a girl off my bus, had my flashing lights on and my stop arm out. I was telling the girl goodbye and she was on the bottom step. She turned to say bye to me and I saw a blue streak coming up on the door side of the bus. I grabbed the girl by the collar and slammed her to the steps. Ya I scratched the girls back up but Mom was outside watching and said she didnt care cause I just prevented her daughter from being killed! It happened another time too.

The stress of managing upwards of 70 kids on the bus at one time is just too great! So I gave up that career.

Parents need to teach thier children how to be more respectful to thier elders. If this girl would have done what she was told then none of this would have happened.

OK the bus driver touched her but it was not inapropriate touche, it wa not a sexual touch, it was not a fist touch. If she lets this stupid little girl get off the bus and gets runed over by a car, raped, killed the school and bus driver would have been in trouble for that. It is the bus drivers responsibility to take care of kids while in theyr bus. Once the kids are out then they can do what ever they want. The problem here was not the bus drivers it was the girl and maybe even the parent's for not teaching her manners. The focus was there on security. This lady politetly told her to sit down while other girl was throwing a tantrum because she did not get her way. She was also looking like a hero beccause her friends were there in the bus. I think the bus driver and the daughter did what they had to do in order to protect themselves.

I really feel sorry for the bus drivers. No one should have to tolerate this horrible behavior. It is not only rude, it is unsafe. I think there should be a school employee  on the bus for discipline so the bus driver can concentrate on driving . Kids who misbehave should lose their privilege after one warning. Maybe the time for school buses has passed. They are unsafe, they don't have seatbelts, they are basically archaic. I have often wondered why schools have a hard time finding bus drivers. Now I understand. Parents need to watch the videotapes of their kids on the bus. In fact, maybe they should ride along sometime. It would be a real eye-opener.

I can understand people being upset about the bus driver touching the student, but I can also understand that this was a major safety issue.  The driver is responsible for the safety and well-being of all of the kids on the bus.  She can't have kids just randomly getting off the bus because they suddenly decide that they don't want to be on the bus anymore.  Yes, I do think that there were probably better ways for the driver to have handled things (and there definitely should have been help sent right away!!!).  But the girl's behavior was completely inexcusable.  There would be MAJOR consequences if our kids were acting like that!  There is absolutely no excuse for that.  And like Holly said, you could see her playing to the camera and her friends, trying to make as big of a scene as possible.

I am SO VERY thankful for our bus situation:  Emma is one of the very last on/first off.  And even better, her driver is our next-door neighbor/friend/pastor.  He has been called the "mean" bus driver because he simply doesn't tolerate bad behavior on his bus.  But in the end, the kids have a great deal of respect for him.  He is NOT mean in the sense of being rude, demeaning, etc.  He just doesn't tolerate bad behavior, and the kids know this.  So, again, we are so thankful!  I know that Emma is in good hands on her way to and from school. Smile

Girl in bus brawl says actions were 'immature'

Staff, wire reports
Feb. 27, 2008 06:08 AM

The high school student caught on videotape scuffling with a school bus driver said she's taking responsibility for her actions.

"I should have sat back down and sucked it up and acted more mature about it," Samantha Taylor,15, a student at Williams Field High School said Tuesday. "I was really immature."

A surveillance camera inside the bus captured the Feb. 15 incident.
Taylor said Higley Unified School District administrators have recommended she be expelled for her actions.

Gilbert police have recommended prosecutors file aggravated assault charges against her.

Taylor said it wouldn't be fair to face such extreme consequences because she did not touch the driver, 54-year-old Kim Sullivan.

"She knew the video was working," said Paula Bigler, the girl's mother. "And if you watch the video, she backs herself backward in the video and you can't see or hear her."

Taylor said the bus driver started the fight because she stopped the bus and told her she needed to find a different way to school because she was being too loud. Taylor said that's why she wanted to get off the bus.

"I'm 5-foot-9 and I'm big, and she was pushing me," Taylor said. "I was kind of resisting, and she was pushing me really hard."

A Gilbert police report released Monday indicates that one of Taylor's earrings was pulled out in the scuffle.

"I don't think it's right, the fact that she could be so aggressive and go after my daughter," Bigler said. "I don't agree with that."

Bigler said she wants the bus driver fired, but district officials said Tuesday they would stand by the driver's actions.

The bus driver's 16-year-old daughter jumped in when her mother and the 15-year-old began pushing and yelling at each other in the aisle near the driver, the bus security video shows. The 16-year-old began pulling the 15-year-old's hair and head back. Then she yelled at her mother to get off the 15-year-old.

A 14-year-old girl had been standing behind the 15-year-old as she and Sullivan were arguing. The 14-year-old girl had also demanded Sullivan let her off, the video shows.

The ride started with the 15-year-old girl pretending not to be on the list of authorized passengers. Then she and Sullivan were both verbally combative. The situation intensified after Sullivan pulled the bus over and asked the 15-year-old, "Why are you on this bus?" and suggested she "find another way" to get to and from school.

A boy on the bus called 911 after the two began pulling each other's hair and pushing one another.

Higley officials sent a letter to parents Wednesday saying they were conducting their own investigation.

HUSD Assistant Superintendent Denise Birdwell has said drivers can only let students off at authorized stops.
