When I was younger our school would always adopt a school of children from low income families. Even then I loved seeing those kids faces when they recieved their gifts. It definetely feels better to give than to receive.

How do you teach your children to give during the holidays?

We usually go through all of their toys and donate ones they dont play with anymore. And we usually donate food. I explain to them why we are doing this and how it will help other families and other boys and girls that dont have the things we do.  They just kind of look at me, and continue helping. Im not sure if they completely understand it yet.

I would love to do more if it was financially possible, but I believe ever little bit helps.

Did you get to go help deliver the presents?

Yes! In high school we went to a school of elementary students and passed out our gifts to them. Then we stayed and ate cookies with them. They were so cute.

When I was in elementary school, I dont remember delivering the toys. I think we just put them in a big box, and then they were delivered. In elemtary school each class would adopt a family. And we would buy gifts for that family.

I am just noticing how we get sent back to the first page of our discussion when we post. I will have the team fix that so that you go straight to your post, so that it's easier for our next forum chat!

I noticed it too. It is a pain. It'll be great once its fixed. What about IM? When that works, will be able to do are discussions through that?? That would be a lot easier!!

question, how do you keep that many children happy? Don't some of them feel left out sometimes, or feel like they are not getting enough attention? How do you spread the love to all so that they know that they are all appreciated and special?

After Jacob was born I was afraid there would be some jealousy, but I just included them in everything. They were always helping me with taking care of him. They would either help bring things to me, or help with the house. Just little things, that made them feel important.

Other than that, every time before I gave birth I was always worried on how could I love another baby, or will I love one more than the other. But once they were born, it just sort of all fell into place. They seem to all get their own attention in different ways. They have never complained or shown any sign of feeling left out. So far!! Hopefully as they grow older they'll still feel the same. I know as a teenager I always thought my brother was being favored.

Another way we focus on giving is that we do homemade gifts. Each child makes a gift for the other children (Yes it's a lot!) We also make for cousins and grandparents. It's really been amazing the last couple of years to see our children MORE excited to give the gift they worked so hard on and watch the other person open it than they are about getting toys! Lots of years of homemade gifts has really been rewarding to my husband and me the last couple years.

It also ensures one on one with each child as my husbnad teaches our sons woodworking and I teach our girls to sew.

What kind of homemade gifts do you make?? I was thinking on doing homemade gifts this year, but dont have any ideas of what to make.

Really, it's my husband that always wants to do the big gifts. He is like a big kid himself and he loves video games, so he is always wanting something for his x box. It's ok, it gives me an excuse to get something for myself.

I do the same thing!Laughing
