Ok, I'm new here and not really sure how to use this site. What do you like about it? I will have to look around the site a little more. I'm not really into posting personal info on the internet so not sure what to be looking to get out of this yet.

thanks for your replies. I have an 11 1/2 year old and a 1 year old...both girls :D There are times when I have found the big age difference to be very challenging...I'm almost 38 and the 2nd one has really proved to me that I'm not a spring chicken anymore. I have my foot in two world's at the same time....school/tween and baby stuff.

I have an 11 1/2 year old girl who has BEGGED for a cellphone for 2 years! In 5th grade (last year) her school bus was late everyday for 2 weeks (we are talking 45 minutes late) and I never knew when she was coming home off the bus...she had called me from the bus from another kids phone, so I finally got her one for her 11th birthday. But I did not get her a full-access phone....I switched to Verizon, got the family plan for me, my husband and her (we also added my mom in Chicago to the plan) and so the plan is $69.99 for the 1st 2 lines and my daughter's line is $9.99 a month additional. We got her the Migo phone which only has 5 buttons on the phone which I had to pre-program the phone #'s into so she is restricted to calling only those #'s. So we only have Verizon #'s in her phone and it doesn't cost us anything more than the $9.99 a month because she can't call anyone else. PLUS....we will NOT tell her what her phone # is so she can't give it put to her friends :D The phone can RECIEVE all calls but is resticted to 4 #'s programed into by the parents and a special button for 911(which is good, too) SO now, everyday she calls me when she is leaving school on the bus and then again when she's about 2 blocks away so I can grab my 1 year old and meet her at the bus stop I have been against her having one until I saw the Migo with Verizon. So far, it does what I want for us. But without all the restrictions, I'd NEVER let her have one that she isn't paying for herself. Smile She still asks when she can get a 'real' cellphone and I remind her that she has a 'real' cellphone, it just can't do what mine can do! Tongue out ANd that she can get one when she's older and can be responsible for the bill herself.

We did a 2 year contract just because we paid less $$$$ for all of our phones and we have no family here(they are in Chicago & California) and most of my family is on Verizon's network, so that's what we did. But if you think yuo want to shop around every year for new plans, you can go with a 1 year contract and just won't get the phones as cheap. BUT...if you do this, we have my husband's, my mom's and my phone #'s all off by 1 digit(the last one) but my daughter has a COMPLETELY different #...no where near what ours is so she can't even begin to figure out what her # is and I don't think she will attempt to figure out how to change the programmed #'s. So far, the novelty has worn off since she got the phone........not as exciting when she can't use it to call her friends Tongue out But it does what I need it to do. Being that it we have no family here and have had a really hard time making friends since we moved here, I like that she can reach me whenever she needs to where ever she is.

Oh, you mean they didn't make you remove all of your clothes and make you walk through in a hospital gown?:D Just kidding....but maybe that's how far they will be taking things at the airports eventually, who knows. Right now, I do feel that it is really important for me to feel safe with the airports/airlines so I think we should just let them do what they need to do to keep us safe. My 11 1/2 year old flys out of state to visit my ex-husband (her dad) so it scares me to send her off, but I feel better seeing them do a lot to protect us, too. At the same time, I know it gets frustrating when it seems silly but if it means she's getting on a plane and gets back to me, that's all I ask forSmile

If I was her, I'd call all those numbers and then check the caller ID. Did you make outbound calls private?

well, for one.....she can't check those phones....one is my cellphone, one is my husband's cellphone, one is her dad's cellphone in Chicago and the other is my mom's cellphone in chicago, too. If yuo can't give your kid that little tiny bit of trust, what are you supossed to do? this works for us, maybe not for you but so far so good for us. if she breaks that trust, it will be taken away from her, simple as that. I'm not going to give her any ideas and how to go about trying to figure out her #, in time she will be trying but like I said, I have to give her a chance to prove to be somewhat responsible and so far, she has been.Smile Plus, she could always check our phone for her contact name to find it, but she doesn't do that either. I think it depends on how much you explain to them that we are trusting them and they need to be responsible or the phone will be taken away. This option costs us only $10 a month and gives her a chance to be responsible at the same time. Kids will be kids at times and the older she gets, the more defiante she might become......we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.:D Plus since she will be flying to chicago to see her dad in a few months, I like her having it for travel as well.....she can call me without asking her dad to use his phone whenever she wants to.Smile

I have to agree with you. I have an 11 1/2 year old and she has always loved fruits & vegetables...of course the older she is the harder we argue about how much of the 'bad' stuff is ok to eat. Frown I don't make her clean her plate, but she has always been a great eater. When she tells me she's had enough, it is usally ok with me because she does eat pretty well. Plus my 1 year old is the same way so far. I think it's important for them to be able to say to me that they have had enough to eat...especially girls in the world today. ;) But since yours is only 5, she is going to go through a lot of changes as far as what she will and won't eat......one day mine loves brocolli and the next, she hates it! Frown Kids!!!:D

I looked into the Firefly BEFORE getting the MIGO with Verizon and the Migo is better for a lot of reasons. I can't remember all of it now but I do remember that the Firefly is pay-as-you-go and I was told about some other problems with it. I also looked it up on amazon.com to read some reviews and they weren't good at the time I looked, it was in April. BUt checkout the Migo with Verizon, we are very happy with it so far Smile

i think it's important to give age-appropriate answers when they ask these questions with truth but not too much that they are like...huh??Tongue out I have found it hard to keep my little girl a little girl....they want to grow up so fast...I keep telling her don;t rush it because you are only a kid for a short time and after that you will be an adult with lots of responsibilites forever!:D

My baby will be 13 months next week and i have NEVER bought a jar of baby food! Smile I found it very easy to just make it myself. I froze it in ice cube trays and defrosted the portions I fed her so I wasn't making it every single day, too. Plus she refused bottles so she started using a sippy cup at 6 months for water but I am still nursing her(in the process of weaning now).

I have a 1 year old and my favorite thing right now is the Hot Sling that I use to carry her on my hip! I love it! I wish I had it when she was an infant, too but we used the Baby Bjorn. She's only 18 lbs so I plan to use the Hot Sling for awhile. If you don't have one, get one! :D
