We have Emma in public school here.  So far we are happy with the schools (good teachers and small class size).  I do agree that all day, every day kindergarten can be a lot, and we really debated with Emma.  (They strongly encourage doing every day, but they do give the option of just doing 3 days a week).  We talked about it a lot, and finally decided that we would give it a try and see how it went, and if it was too much we could cut back.  It was a big adjustment for Emma, and she does get tired out, but she's doing really well and definitely wants to be there every day.

Awesome information!  It's nice to have recomendations of safe products, so parents don't have to go searching all over to try to find something.  Thanks for the great info! Smile

Well, the kids get to see Randy's dad quite a bit, as he lives in the same town.  They got to see his mom a lot too until she moved.  Now we see her a couple times a year.

My parents are about 2 hours away.  We talk daily, and get to visit a couple times a month.  And they always do everything in their power to be here for school events, etc.  Last spring they drove 4 hours round trip to watch Emma's 20 minute dance recital. Smile

I kind of agree with both.  To me, the idea of leaving a 9-year-old in NYC to get home on their own would scare me.  But I don't live in a big city, and that's not really something I have to deal with.  Living in a small town, where we know the majority of people, I do feel a little more at ease.

I do definitely agree that all of the media attention on every little thing has caused a lot of parents to become excessively worried about things that really are not a big issue, like bacteria in snow.  We finally got rid of the last of our snow over the last week.  We have a puppy who will be a year in a couple weeks.  Her favorite thing all winter was running around and eating snow.  She is still running around with no adverse side effects.  Every school day afternoon, Emma's routine consisted of getting off the bus, grabbing a handful of snow from the massive pile in our yard, and muching on it as she slowly meandered up the driveway.  She also does not appear to have suffered any ill effects.  In fact, she is one of the healthiest people I know.  I do think that there is a place for being cautious about germs if your child has serious health problems.  But for most children, I think we are doing a great disservice in being so obsessed with germs.  There are germs everywhere, and nothing we do is going to eliminate them from our world.  And being exposed to these germs in everyday settings is what helps build our immune systems.  Now, do I advocate allowing your child to play with raw poultry and then lick their hands?  No.  I'm not talking about being irresponsible.  I'm simply talking about letting go a little and not freaking out over things that are really non-issues.  Lighten up just a little and let your kids be kids.  And get in there with them and have fun.  We might learn something from them. Smile

What I tried to say in my ramblings above (I apologize if I'm not making sense today....fighting a migraine....grrr.....) is that I do believe that it's important to be informed and try to make responsible decisions for our families.  However, I REFUSE to live my life in fear of what could possibly happen.  I am not going to freak out if my kids eat snow, or dirt.  I am not going to sanitize every thing that they touch.  I am not going to refuse them water from the tap...or the garden hose for that matter.  I am not going to stand over them at every turn.  For me, in my life, I believe one of the most important things that I can do for my children is to pray for them every day.  For those who don't believe in prayer, that's fine.  I'm just saying that's what I do, because to me it's important.  We live in a world that can be dangerous and painful, but I will not live my life worrying, paralyzed by fear of what could be.  I am going to enjoy life, and enjoy my kids, because childhood doesn't last forever.

I agree.....we actually don't do a lot of rice here.  We generally get our carbs from bread, pasta and potatoes.  Mmmm.....yummy........

And I agree that this stuff tends to get blown out of proportion in the media, creating a frenzy that ends up creating shortages that probably wouldn't have been there.  So, I don't really see this affecting us too terribly.

I TOTALLY agree!  With the situation of the 9 year old by himself- it's not a matter of not trusting your child.  It's a matter of not trusting all of the rest of the world.  I also am a big believer in the group thing.  There IS safety in numbers, and there is someone to get help if a problem comes up.  So yeah, I agree.  It's great and necessary to foster independence in our children, but we need to make responsible decisions also.

Randy is usually not much of a breakfast eater.  Sometimes he will have some eggs if he has time.  I do like scrambled eggs, breakfast burritos, and I like making our own sauage egg and cheese muffins, made with 100% whole wheat english muffins.  Yummy!!!!   Timothy usually has Cheerios and yogurt.  Emma will have fruit, yogurt, cereal, eggs, string cheese and peanut butter sandwhiches in any combination.  I also make a lot of smoothies for breakfast.

Here is another story out of Chicago.  Right now they are still in the process of investigating how and why this happened.  It's just kind of crazy though, especially in light of the other stuff going on there.

I am thoroughly in love with Arbonne!  I love their anti-aging skin care, various types of body wash (depending on my mood at the time), and their shampoo and conditioner.  The facial moisturizer and shampoo and conditioner have a patented nanosphere technology that "reads" your hair and skin to give just the right amount of moisture.  And I REALLY love their make-up!

As for hair care products (gels, creams, etc) I am always trying different things to get the most curl with the least frizz.

lol Emma used a blanket last fall, and that's how she lost her first tooth!

But yeah, they are just crazy sometimes!  It is really amazing to watch the imaginary games they play, the things they create, and the things they come up with to say!  Yesterday Emma make an art project- she took a piece of pink construction paper and glued on beads, rocks and crayons- in a standing-up position.  It was quite the unique, 3D project. Smile  And Timothy has just been running around non-stop being various super heroes for the past week. Smile

We have a big calendar in the kitchen that we use as a family calendar.  Then I also print out a little one-month calendar for the kids to put in their rooms, with things written on it that involve them.  They like keeping track of what day it is and what's going on.  Quite honestly though, I need to do a better job about writing things down.  I think I try to rely on my memory a little too much sometimes, and I should know better than that!!! Smile
