Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 7 months ago Well, the bad news is that this is a very common thing at this age. The good news is that if you handle it well it won't last forever. I agree with the sending her to her room to have her tantrums. If you consistantly send her there and have her stay there until she calms down, pretty soon she will realize that she doesn't have an audience. It doesn't necessarily completely stop the tantrums in their tracks (our 5 1/2 year old still pulls them out) but it's a lot less effective to have a tantrum by yourself. And I completely understand about the whole not being able to leave the store thing. We also live 20-30 minutes from where we do the bulk of our shopping, and when we take a day to go do it, it is not feasible to just pack up and go home again without finishing our stuff. But one idea in the stores is to get them involved. You can have her help you find things and put them in the cart, etc. And whatever you do, as hard as it is, DO NOT give in to the tantrums. If you give in even once, then it sends them the message that if I act badly enough for long enough, I might get my way. Whether at home or at the store, let them know that you are in control and screaming, whining, etc are not going to change your mind. And also, make sure to acknowledge and reward good behavior ("Wow, thank you so much for being a great helper", etc.) I am not going to pretend that I am an expert and that things like that never happen here. But when they do, our kids know (with repeated reminders) that that kind of behavior does not change our minds, and it's fine to be angry, frustrated, etc, but if you need to scream, stomp, etc it needs to be done in your own room. At any rate, I wish you the very best. Hang in there and it will get better!
"I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth." -Psalm 57:9-11.

We do that a lot when we have tantrums and/or whining here. Like Jan said, you have to stick with it and eventually they will start to understand that this gives them a much better response. In all of it, it really is about being consistant. Best wishes!

Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 7 months ago Shelley, I think that's an awesome way for the school to present sex education! Then you and your child can listen to what was said, and go home and discuss it and talk about what you think of things and share your values and insights, while listening to what your child has to say about it. That sounds like a great way to open up the lines of conversation between parents and kids.

Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 7 months ago Yeah, I so get that! Emma was completely day-time potty-trained at three. It really went just lovely. But she still wears a pull-up to bed because she still has major issues with wetting the bed at night. I have been told by many (including the peds) that this is just normal with some kids, that there are a variety of factors involved, and that there is not a lot you can do until they out-grow it. It is still very frustrating, nonetheless. But, thankfully, she hasn't peed through her jammies in quite a long time, so I'm hoping that is a sign of improvement. And I know that sometimes she wakes up right after she wets and gets up and puts on a clean pull-up. It's just the whole getting herself to wake up BEFORE she goes. As for Timothy, he was also fully day-time potty trained at 3, and it also went really well with him. But he actually did really, really well at night. He would sometimes go through the night without having to go at all. But if he did have to go, he would come in and wake us up to help with his jammies and he would do his thing and go back to bed. But 4 nights out of the past week he has peed through his jammies. I really don't know what's going on with that, but it's really irritating. And again, it's that not knowing how much is beyond their control and how much is just not wanting to get up and go. I don't really know. But yeah, it's not a fun part of the job, but I know it won't be forever, and pretty soon they will be all grown up. And then I'll miss this. Minus the extra laundry. Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 7 months ago I took Spanish in high school and college, so I know a little bit (not nearly enough to be anywhere near fluent, but some). I would also LOVE to learn sign language. We got a baby sign language book when Timothy was a baby, and we did a little bit with that, but I wish I had kept up with it more. I do think it would be really cool to have the kids really learn another language. I do think that it's really beneficial.

Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 7 months ago I didn't actually watch the video....that just didn't really seem necessary to get the gist of the story. But yeah, saying that the internet makes kids commit violent behavior is just another excuse to me. I do agree that the more violence we are exposed to, the more desensitized we can become, but we are still responsible for our actions. And as parents, we are responsible for our children. It is not the school's responsibility to monitor and teach our children right from wrong. It is not their friends' job. It's not the internet or tv's job. It's our job. You can't ignore your children and their behavior and then try to blame everyone else for their poor decisions and actions.
