Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 8 months ago This has indeed been a very interesting exchange. I think that those articles are interesting, and I would appreciate any links to articles about any of the candidates. Like Holly said, I honestly don't especially care for any of the 3, and I am rather disgusted by the fact that it always seems like it comes down to trying to choose the lesser of 2 (or 3) evils. I really don't care what party a person is affiliated with or what they call themselves. It is the person's character, morals and their record that matter. I agree that this is going to be a big election, with a LOT of things riding on it. And it is easy to take things personally when they involve not just names on a ballot, but our core values, goals, etc. It is a big deal. The one thing that I am happy about in this election is that they way things are going, there is little room for simply ignoring things and professing no opinion or interest in things. And because people have opinions, they are becoming involved and voting. And I believe that is very important for people to be involved, whatever your beliefs. It is apathy that is one of the most dangerous things. When we stop caring, and just go along for the ride, that's when things really start to fall apart. So, I say debate on, people! Get up, get involved and make your voices heard. This is our country, and our governement, and our freedom that was bought at a steep price. Don't waste it on apathy. I personally am not a big Obama fan, but neither am I a big fan of the others either. I am still seeking and praying on this issue, but as Holly said, I am not stressing about it either. I believe in a Lord who knows the end from the beginning...another freedom that we have been blessed with. Anyway, this has gotten really long, and I apologize. Anyway, as I said before, on with the debates!

Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 8 months ago The Joys of Having Girls Ahhhhh ... The joys of having Girls My mother taught me to read when I was four years old (her first mistake). One day, I was in the bathroom and noticed one of the cabinet doors was ajar. I read the box in the cabinet. I then asked my mother why she was keeping "'napkins" in the bathroom. Didn't they belong in the kitchen? Not wanting to burden me with unnecessary facts, she told me that those were for "special occasions" (her second mistake). Now fast forward a few months. It's Thanksgiving Day, and my folks are leaving to pick up my uncle and his wife for dinner. Mom had assignments for all of us while they were gone. Mine was to set the table. When they returned, my uncle came in first and immediately burst into laughter. Next came his wife who gasped, then began giggling. Next came my father, who roared with laughter. Then came Mom, who almost died of embarrassment when she saw each place setting on the table with a "special occasion" Kotex napkin at each plate, with the fork carefully arranged on top. I had even tucked the little tail in so they didn't hang off the edge!! My mother asked me why I used these and, of course, my response sent the other adults into further fits of laughter. "But Mom, you said they were for special occasions!!!" This just totally cracked me up! I could totally see that being Emma.

Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 8 months ago Great story, and fabulous advice! It is really easy to get caught up in being responsible, and it is absolutely necessary to just take advantage of those opportunities to do something fun and crazy. It can take a little more planning when you have kids, but it's not impossible. I am REALLY excited to be going with one of my very best friends to a women's conference this weekend. This will be....I believe the 4th time we have gone together, and it is AWESOME to have that time away from our duties as moms. It is so important. And just a small example of being a little spontaneous, even with the kids.....last Saturday was Randy's 30th birthday. He is notorious for not being into planning anything in advance, despite my best efforts. So, that morning we decided that we should go bowling, and maybe invite his dad and another couple and their son. So we were planning on going to the place about 20 minutes from home, but they didn't seem totally enthused about that. So, we were going to go to another place about 40 minutes away that has a nicer establishment. But when we called, they didn't have any open bowling that day. So we called our friends back, and they said "Let's just go to Fargo." Well, that's about an hour and a half away (not anything unattainable, but it was also about 1 by this time). We just jumped right in and said "Why not?" So we packed up the kids and drove an hour and half to go bowling and go out for supper. And we had a blast! And that's what it's really about. "I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth." -Psalm 57:9-11.

Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 8 months ago Ok, I have not been totally pleased with my 80s page. It was ok and had some great stuff in there, but it just wasn't totally doing the job for me. So, I changed it up a little bit. I think this is a little better representation of what the 80s were about for me.

Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 8 months ago I agree! It is so important for kids to be able to explore and get dirty. And it's equally good for us! Like Susan said, pretty much anything can be cleaned up with a little soap and water and a little effort. Plus, we had outside play clothes (things that were getting worn out, etc) that it didn't really matter if they got dirty, torn, etc. That's what we try to do here too. Do I want Emma bathing in the mud in her Easter dress? Not so much. Do I have a problem with her throwing on some play clothes and diving in? Not at all. It gets easy to take life too seriously. That's one of the most beautiful things about having kids- they remind us that it's ok to let go and just have fun and not worry about the dirt.

Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 8 months ago Thanks for the tip! It's always great to have resources like that. I know that Emma could use a little extra practice with math, and she might enjoy that. I'm going to go check that out now! Thanks for sharing!

Lisa JoyJoined: 8/28/07 Posts: 1044 | Posted: 7 months ago Good topic! This is a topic that came up at a women's conference I attended last weekend. The speakers had some really great suggestions. First, though, I want to say that I do believe that it is first and foremost the parents' responsibility to teach their children about sex. We have taught both of our kids about our private areas and how should keep them private, and no one else is allowed to touch them there. We also address questions that they have as they come up with honest answers. I personally would want to see the school curriculum before I allowed my child to participate in the class at school. But anyway, back to what I started to say about the conference. One speaker said that she has talked very honestly to her daughters about sex. She said that simply telling your kids to say no and avoid anything related to sex at all costs is not ultimately beneficial. When you have been taught all your life that sex is bad, that idea isn't going to automatically change on your wedding night. She said that she has told her girls that sex is not bad. It's actually wonderful! And our bodies and our responses are not bad. She told them that she wants them to have the very best sex life possible, and that the very best is within the boundaries of marriage. She told them that she wants them to be tigers in the bedroom, but those tigers need to be trained. She told them to know their bodies, and how they respond to different triggers, so they know exactly when they need to stop. She asked them what their goals are and to think about what they need to do to reach those goals. She also asked them what it is about sex that they really want. If it is the physical sensation, that can be accomplished without a guy at all. So it was about teaching your kids to make good choices based on what they want in life. Another speaker said that teens have often asked her the question of how far is it ok to go if you are wanting to abstain until marriage. She tells them that you can do whatever you would feel comfortable doing in front of your father. I think these are really useful things. It's not simply telling them do this or don't do that. It's helping them to make good choices based on what they want in life. And I do think it's important to give our kids accurate information and help them to think things through ahead of time. So, that's my 2 cents. "I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth." -Psalm 57:9-11.
