Since I like milk chocolate with caramel or peanut butter or nougat, I am not a real chocoholic. I like it, but I'm not crazy about it like most people. My mother and sister would rather eat chocolate than just about anything else, but I can take it or leave it.

I also enjoy the biography channel and televised concerts. I like nature shows, too. I hate to watch videos at home, though. I prefer the theater.

Just now I went back to delete a couple of posts, and it would not let me delete. When I hit delete it took me to Post a Reply. I don't understand this. Can anyone help? If not, I'm going to have to become a whole lot more careful.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago I can see why you are hurt. You feel your Mom is putting her needs before yours, and she is. I'm assuming that your other siblings are adults now. You all have your own lives, and she may be trying to fill a void in hers. Granted, he doesn't sound like a great guy, but short of telling her how you feel there is nothing you can do about her choice. Just keep loving her in spite of her bad decision, just as I'm sure she kept loving you in spite of bad decisions you've made. (Haven't we all made bad decisions at some time?) She is obviously looking for happiness, and this man must be giving her some. If he gets abusive toward her, you will have to step in, call the police, do whatever it takes to keep her safe. l Whatever you do, don't shut your mom out of your life because of her choice in men. In fact, give her extra love. She might need it right now. Estella | |
EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago I wanted to be a doctor, or maybe my parents wanted me to be a doctor. My parents always told me that we would work together as a family. I would be the doctor, my mom would be the nurse, and my dad would be the ambulance driver. I thought this sounded pretty fun. Minor problem: blood and veins make me weak. Then my dad wanted me to be a pilot. I took a few flying lessons, but I am geographically impaired, so I could fly all right, but we wouldn't ever get to our destination.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago I'm not a smoker, although I have friends and family who are. I don't think smokers should be treated as second-class citizens. As long as people are not blowing smoke in the faces of others, I think it's everyone's right to choose their poison. We're all going to die of something anyway. Apparently, smoking brings great pleasure to some people. I have tried it and didn't like it, although when I was 16 I thought I looked cool holding a cigarette out the window when I drove. Smoking, unlike drinking or drug addictions, does not impact other people as long as the smoker is considerate and goes outside to smoke. I'm all for protecting people from secondhand smoke. It seems that if all smokers were considerate people, we wouldn't have to involve the government and create bans. I remember the days when people would come to the house and ask, "Do you mind if I smoke?" Since I have asthma, I do mind, but I prefer the civility of asking rather than the self-righteous attitude of people who view smoking as a criminal offense. I think bars and restaurants should have a closed-off section for smokers as smoking goes along with eating and drinking for most people. I hate the judgmental attitude of many non-smokers toward smokers. Some of my favorite people are smokers, and I don't love them any less for it.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago Do you think she is really doing this to get a rise out of you? I never thought of it until I read Anytgamma's post, but she might be right. She might actually be lonely. Some women need a man in their lives, even if the man is a negative factor. I have a very close friend like this who can be surrounded by loving friends and family, but if no man is around she feels lonely. Stick by your mom and welcome the man into your life unless he proves to be dangerous.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago The holidays are officially over, but I've just spoken to a few friends today who are still depressed. They cite cold, gloomy weather, the financial debris of Christmas past, and the letdown of Christmas and New Year's Eve expectations as causes. I think if we would all concentrate on spending quality time with family and friends during the bleak winter months rather than buying gifts and going to big parties full of strangers, everyone would be a whole lot happier. In this largely impersonal society we live in, most people are yearning to connect on a deeper level than our busy lives affords. Add to this the fact that most of us are not lucky enough to have our families live nearby, and you can see why people are depressed. My antidote to depression is lots of brisk walking uphill. Then the downhill will feel like a treat.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago It sounds like she is lonely and needs someone there on a daily basis. Most adult children can't provide that kind of constant availablility. Wait and see.....their relationship will work out or not. But you should take the high road anyway.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago When my chihuahuas were stolen and held for ransom during a burglary I was interviewed on two different news stations. I even had to do a dramatization of what happened. ( No Academy Awards in my future) They showed pix of the dogs and made pleas to the public to help us find them. Three weeks to the day later, and $500 in ransom money later, we got them back, in terrible shape but alive. The news stations did a follow up story on our reunion. I was very grateful to the reporters who really got emotionally involved in the case.
