EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago My kids used to react like that over their big-ticket item. Those faces were priceless. I love that kids are so expressive. Adults might be that excited, but they try to play it down a bit so as not to make fools of themselves.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago I was spoiled, too. I think there is a difference between spoiled and spoiled rotten. I put myself in the former category. I had lots of toys, but I was grateful not bratty. I, too, had a pony. Mine was a Shetland named Laddie. He bit me and tried to knock me off under trees. Then I had a burro named Chiquita. She used to try to rub my legs against barbed wire. That ended my love affair with large animals. My parents gave me everything they could afford with the idea that maybe someday I wouldn't be so lucky. I am grateful for that.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago I wanted to add that my parents could afford to be generous with us, so they were, but they also were very generous to others. They have always given a great deal to people who need help. That was a great life lesson for us children. Not long ago my mother sold her car for a couple hundred dollars ( it was worth several thousand) to a coworker, a single mother with a few children who was down on her luck. Mom didn't have much money herself at the time. I warned her that she might not ever see all the money as she allowed the woman to make monthly payments of $50. Mom said it was OK if she didn't because the woman desperately needed a car to get to work. The woman missed a few payments but eventually she paid in full. Mom loved that car but never looked back.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago Clinton gets my vote because we'll get two presidents in one. I thought Bill was a great prez. We need someone who understands diplomacy now that we are despised by most of the world. Bill can give Hillary some pointers as he is an articulate communicator and a brilliant man. Hillary is equally or more brilliant but lacking charisma. That can be learned.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago As much as i don't enjoy gambling, I end up in Las Vegas every few months because my uncle lives there and we have frequent family reunions there. I have learned to have lots of fun in LV without gambling. i often have hours to kill by myself, while everyone else gambles. Last time I sat at an oxygen bar at the Venetian. I've gotten massages, gone shopping, hung out at a bar at the Bellagio, hiked Red Rock State Park, eaten BBQ at The Salt Lick, taken lots of long walks outside the casinos, gone to shows, etc. I am the only one in my family that doesn't like gambling, so I've learned to be resourceful.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago When I sold my son's crib and bought a big boy bed, he cried for days about it. He really preferred to stay in his crib, but by that time it was too late. It was gone. All the "big boy" talk did not console him. Finally, I asked him what he missed so much about his crib, and he sobbed, "It was pretty, and it had blue flowers on it." I immediately bought him some very pretty sheets with blue flowers, and he was a bit happier. He was somewhere between 15 months and 2 years at the time. This pattern of not letting go of familiar, comforting things has continued. He's very sentimental and nostalgic, and he gets it from me.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago I think this is really common. Very few people get to experience the perfect holiday of their dreams. Many elderly people are alone, kids can't get home, etc. Add to that the financial strain and pressure to buy the perfect gifts, cook the perfect meal, be perfectly cheerful at all times. It's all too much for most people. I am somewhat of a perfectionist Super Mom type, so i used to start everything really early. In the last couple of years I have relaxed more. I shop in the last couple of weeks before Christmas. I send Christmas cards around Dec. 15 or 20, I bake when I feel like it. It all still gets done, and it still gets done well, but i just don't stress about it much anymore. I try to focus on spending time with people i care about during the holidays...family and friends. The rest can wait.

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 11 months ago I talked to a friend today who told me that this year all his resolutions would be positive. Instead of working on fixing what's wrong with him he would concentrate on doing things that interest him that he thought he didn't have time for, such as dance lessons. I really like his idea. Most people choose resolutions that focus on breaking nasty habits. Instead, why not begin new positive habits. I'm going to take a cue from my friend and begin thinking of some things I've always wanted to do. One of them is taking an archaeology class. I've always been fascinated with it and have learned of an opportunity to be part of a dig. I'm signing up tomorrow.
