EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 2 yearss ago A fun, educational place for teenagers is Washington, D.C. It's fun for them to connect with their studies in American History. It's also really economical. You can spend days at the Smithsonion alone. You can walk most anywhere, too. I highly recommend it. For older teens, the Holocaust Museum is unforgettable. If you go around Easter, you'll catch the cherry blossoms, too. Beautiful! Estella

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 2 yearss ago I absolutely loved this movie! It was so uplifting and thought-provoking. Best of all, it is based on a true story. The protagonist is relentless in his desire to be successful as a businessman and a father. He overcomes incredible odds. It's a movie every parent should watch---a reminder of how important it is to be role models for our kids.Estella

EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 2 yearss ago I don't think allowances should be tied to doing chores. Kids should understand that chores are just things we all do to keep the household running. I don't get paid to cook dinner, grocery shop, etc. Kids do need some spending money, but on an as-needed basis. Don't give them enough to allow them to get into trouble or be the target of lunch-money bullies.Estella
EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 2 yearss ago When my twins were 2 months old, I had to travel alone with them on a three hour flight. I sat in the bulkhead and was prepared to be very busy. A kind lady moved into the seat next to me just so she could help. I have never felt so grateful. Ever since then, if I am traveling alone and see a parent who could use some help, I will move right next to the parent and offer my assistance. On a recent five-hour flight, an adorable toddler cuddled in my arms most of the whole way home. His dad was very appreciative. He looked exhausted.Estella
EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 2 yearss ago I wish I'd had MommyTalk when my kids were babies. It would have been wonderful to be able to ask for advice or support whenever I needed it. I remember the feeling of being overwhelmed and having no adult conversation during the day. Once I would finally get them to bed at night, I would take a long walk with a neighbor/friend who also had two babies. One night I came home with lights ablazing and husband pacing frantically. He was a minute from calling the police. Seemed I was enjoying myself so much that I had walked for four hours! It was after midnight! No cell phone, no track of time whatsoever. My friend and I were talking and walking so fast that we covered about 12 miles! She came home to a panicked husband, too. We still laugh about that, and we are still close friends, thanks to those days. Try reaching out to moms who live close to you. Sometimes you need some face to face contact with a mom who understands what you are going through. Best of luck to you! Estella
EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 2 yearss ago Before I knew I was pregnant, I sat in a hot tub for a couple of hours one night looking at a beautiful skyline with a group of friends. About a week later I learned I was pregnant. and I worried the entire 9 months that I had gotten overheated and damaged my unborn chidren. Fortunately, the water had not been that hot and everything turned out fine, but I had many sleepless nights over this!Estella
EstellaJoined: 1/30/07 Posts: 346 | Posted: 2 yearss ago Recent studies have shown that petting dogs reduces stress. How about going to the local Animal Shelter or Humane Society and volunteering to walk/pet/play with dogs? You will benefit and so will they. Don't forget to bring some healthy treats, too.
