Hello and good evening all!

Well I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and are begining to think of the new year! As an EMT and a Mother of two I want to take a moment to remind people to be very careful on New Years Eve. There are alot of extra people out that night and alot of them are drunk. Every year there are lots of people who are either seriously injured or killed on our roadways in America due to idiots who think they can drive home cause they think they feel fine. Please this coming Sunday if you choose to drink get a designated driver, a taxi cab, your parents to drive you home. I want you to get home in on piece and not kill someone else on the roads.

I unfortunately have to work that night and Im expecting NOT to sleep at all that night. I worked it last year and I didnt sleep then. So please if you dont want to see me scraping you up off the road or peeling you out of your totaled car or if you dont want to have a cop at your door saying Im sorry your child is dead. DONT DRINK AND DRIVE!!!

 Please read this poem. Everytime I read this it gives me the chills. 

I went to a party, Mom,
I remembered what you said,
You told me not to drink, Mom,
So I drank the Coke instead.
I felt really proud , Mom,
The way you said I would.
I didnt drink and drive, Mom,
even when they said I should.
I know I did the right thing, Mom,
I know you're always right.
now the party is ending, Mom,
and everyone is driving out of sight.


As I got into the car, Mom,
I knew I'd get home in one piece,
because the way you raised me, Mom,
so responsible and sweet.
I started to drive away, Mom,
but as I pulled onto the road,
the other car didn't see me, Mom,
and hit me like a load.


As I lay there on the gravel, Mom,
I heard the big cop say,
"The other guy was drunk", Mom,
and I'm the one who'll pay.
I'm lying here dying, Mom,
I wish you'd get here soon,
How come this happened to me, Mom,
My life burst like a balloon.
There is blood all over me, Mom,
I swear I didn't drink!
It was all the others, Mom,
The others didn't think.
He didn't know where he was going, Mom,
He was at the same party as I,
But the only difference is, Mom,
He drank, and I will die.
Why do people drink and drive, Mom?
It can ruin your whole life.
I'm feeling some sharp pains, Mom,
Pains just like a knife.
The man who hit me is walking, Mom,
I don't think that is fair.
I'm lying here dying, Mom,
While all he can do is stare.
And tell my brothers not to cry, Mom,
Tell daddy I'll be brave,
And when I get to heaven, Mom,
Write "Daddy's Girl" on my grave.


Someone should have told him, Mom,
Not to drink and drive.
If only he had known,....
I'd still be alive.


My breath is getting shorter, Mom,
I'm becoming very scared.
Please don't cry for me, Mom,
because when I needed you, you were there.
I have one last question, Mom,
before I say goodbye,
I didn't drink and drive, Mom,
So why am I to die?
This is the last time, Mom,
I wish I could look in your eyes,
To say the last final words,
I love you, and........ goodbye.
 

Wow, that was very hard to read.

I still have tears in my eyes. Thank you for posting. I wish everyone that even thinks about driving drunk could read that poem. Maybe it would help them think twice about what they are about to do.

Keri - thank you for sharing and THANK you for the job you do!  It takes a special person to be able to go in do there job - no matter how hard and not take personal until later!

People who drink and drive do not think about anyone but themselves - saying it will NEVER happen to me! 

In my younger days, pre kids - I admit I was one of those people, being from a small town.  However, I was lucky enough to work as a 911 operator, and all my guys would come in check on me, if I had a good (bad) night  - they would take me home.  I love each and everyone of them for it, as I do not know if I would be here without them. 

Now with kids, we rarely go out because me thinking of the other person and what if they hit us like the poem says - I want to be there for my kids!

We will be out on New Year's Eve - in LA at the Orangedrop.  However, we are going as guest of a band that is performing and will be riding in limos provided.  And even though there will be a DD, I will still only drink a few, maybe the toast at midnight.

Now that I am older it is not "as fun" and it takes longer to recoup the next day!  I have more fun with a soda and watching the other's make a complete #$$ out of themselves.

It can be hard sometimes going on calls when it is a child. I have gone on several. And having people yell and call me names isnt easy but in this career you cannot let any of it affect you. If the child died yes it would bother me some. Havent dealt with that yet. Had a call of a pediatric code but thankfully it was wrong. Child had hit his head when he fell off the couch and onto the tile.

Im glad so far people are taking the appropriate actions to prevent driving drunk.
