Don't Let Sleeping Babies Lie -- in Car Seats

Car Seats Pose a Potentially Deadly Threat to an Infant's Airways: Study

By JASMINE KARALAKULASINGAM

Dec. 8, 2006 — - Texas father Mikey Terry realized his mistake when he found the lifeless body of his infant daughter, Mika, in the back seat of his truck.

Mika was 6 months and 9 days old when she died of hyperthermia after being tragically forgotten, in a rush of everyday distractions, on a hot June day in 2005.

Such stories -- all too common -- remind parents that a child's life can be ripped away in an instant should that child be left unattended in a car that is too hot or too cold. But few parents know that it isn't only the weather that poses a life-threatening risk, but also the car seat itself.

Newborn babies should not sleep in car seats and be left alone, according to a new study in the British Medical Journal. The consequences could be fatal.

Researchers Reconstruct Dangerous Car Seat Scenes

The study looked at 43 infants in New Zealand who -- between July 1999 and December 2000 -- were referred to a hospital service that studies infants at high-risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Of those infants, nine had suffered some sort of apparent life-threatening event (ALTE) while in a car seat.

Four of the babies, when found, were described as "limp and nonresponsive," according to the study. All were found either "blue" or "not breathing."

The researchers then reconstructed the scene -- as if it were a crime scene -- and figured out that all nine of the babies had been sitting with their heads flexed forward and their jaws pressed against their chests. This position -- or, this head flexion -- narrowed the airways, making every breath a challenge.

Because "the infants [in the study] were very young [and their] head control is not well developed," the authors of the study said this head position is a potentially fatal one. Sleep poses an additional risk, because the throat muscles relax and make it hard to keep one's airway open.

Half of the infants were children of smokers -- and secondhand smoke is known to weaken a baby's drive to breathe. All of these factors help explain why a car seat is so potentially dangerous.

Car Seats Still Important Protection for Infants

This is not to say that parents should not use car seats. More children are killed as passengers in car crashes, according to the American Academy Pediatrics (AAP), than by any other type of injury. And we know that car seats can reduce injury by up to 95 percent when used correctly, said Michael Hayes, the author of a letter accompanying the study. Though this is the first study looking at infant position in car seats and death risk, the AAP has been recommending that "infants should ride at a 45 degree angle to prevent slumping and airway obstruction," according to a 2002 policy statement.

Doctors recommend that infant car seats should be modified "so that head flexion is unlikely," which could decrease the "risk of apparent life threatening events," said study author Dr. Shirley Tonkin, a general practitioner associated with the New Zealand Cot Death Association.

In the meantime, until the design of car seats changes, parents should be watchful of infants sleeping in car seats.

Wow...thats scary!! My kids always fell asleep in their carseats. (with the exception of JacobUndecided)

Hopefully they'll come out soon with a carseat that can help prevent this. I know I always worried how their little heads would slump over, and the little head supporters never really worked for us.

Thanks for the info!!

I never really understood how it could be comfortable for my babies to sleep in their car seats with their heads hanging in front of them.  I am truly thankful that nothing happened to any of them.  My 3rd child (a son) had a breathing problem at birth from being premature (over 6 weeks early).  He had on an apnea monitor at all times.  I can't even tell you how many times that monitor would go off in the car while we were driving.  I would have to pull over and make sure he was breathing.  It does make me wonder, if because he was so small and his head was always bent forward, if that is why the monitor would go off in the car every time.?. I am glad that we are past that stage now.  This was good information for everyone to read.  I will certainly pass it on to family and friends that have infants.  Thanks.Smile

I find this extremely interesting.  I was saying again just today while we were driving home from lunch that I need to invent something to keep kids heads from falling forward when they fall asleep in the car.  It bothers me that when my 2 year old falls asleep his head falls forward - and it has bothered me since he was an infant.  This study validates my concern.  Thanks for sharing.

That's a very interesting idea. I think you might be on to something. Thanks for posting this story. I know that my kids fall asleep in their car seats all the time. I have three of them back there!

if anyone has a a new baby and is wanting to purchase a SUV I found out that the Nissan Armada is trying to help these kind of stories out.....they have the 2nd row ...the middle seat that can pull forward (its the size for a carseat) it can pull forward enough to the center console of the driver seat......I have a friend that just purchased with her child in mind.  Being able to reach down or look down to help a mom feel more secure that she can just reach for her child.........while driving......

This is very interesting. Both of my girls were on ventilators when they were born due to them breathing in amniotic fluid at birth. When my first girl (Keelie) was brought home from the hospital she wouldnt sleep in her crib. The only way she would sleep at night was in her car seat. We would but it in her crib with the bottom propped up with a blanket. That really makes me think about what if that would have happened to her while i was asleep and i didnt know?? Its very scary. Im not gonna go anywhere in the car from now on!!! LOL I will be very cautious from now on though. Thanks so much for that info.

This is great information. Thanks for sharing. It's so common to let have your child fall asleep in their car seat. I am going to watch out for this now, so thank you.
