Hello I'm new here so this question my have been asked already.
I have a seven year old son. He makes good grades at school.
The only problem is his teacher says he is driving her crazy.
She says she is having to keep on to him so he will stay on task.
It got me to wondering if there is an herb that is safe for children to take that
would help him concentrate during the day. So he will stay on task , do his
work without looking or feeling he is druged. Right now he hates going to school,
because he knows she will be on to him all day to do his work. I talked to his doctor
because I started feeling he may have a d h d or something. But his doctor said he
would not test my son from what he has seen of him over the years. Plus, because
of the good grades he is makeing. He feels it is my sons teacher who has the
problem not wanting to deal with her students. I'm at
a loss because I do not have trouble getting my son to do his home work each day.
Yesterday she called me forty minutes before school let out. Telling me she could not
handle him any longer and she was not letting him go to some thing they were having.
Telling me he could just set there or I could come and get him. I wanted to go pick up
my son but I knew if I did then he would expect it all the time. Plus I didn't want to
give her and out. Its her job to teach my son, not send him home because she
is having a bad day. I don't know what all is going on there but I wish I did.
So would any one know if there is a safe (safe being the most improtant thing)
herb that may help my son concertate while at school?

What I would first do as a mom my self would be to sit in the classroom and just watch what is going to in their. When my step-son had the same problem I took time off of work because no one else would (meaning his mom or dad) and I went in and observed the class and helped out for a few days a week and found out the teacher had no controle over the whole class not just my step-son. I am very hesatant about giving any of my kids anything that is herbal or any other medication in this situation till I have tried all of my options.

I am new to whole thing of having my kids in school, but it almost sounds like his teacher is picking on him. For her to just want to throw her hands up in the air and give up sounds strange. If he gets good grades what exactley does she say the problm is?? Just that he is hyper and doesnt stay on task?? I have had almost the same experince with my daughters teacher. She has just explained my daughter in a way I have never heard any of her teachers explain her. Almost as if she is complaining about her.
Im curious to see everyones opinion about this, because like I said I am completey new to having children in school.
Good Luck with whatever you decide to do!!!

Every child is so different. It is wonderful that your son is getting such good grades at school, did he have this problem with his teacher from last year? Does your son's school offer any type of resources to help him while in the classroom. My son has a slightly different situation, as he is now learning disabled due to brain cancer, but his school sets up meetings with the school Counsler, Psychologist, Teacher, and Principal so that we can go over what is working best to make sure that he is getting the best education possible. We have the meeting once or twice a year called an IEP meeting, and they are usually after some testing is done to see how he is improving, and in what areas he needs help. Even children with ADHD and other learning disabilities have these meetings. Our school provides on site Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapies for those children who require the services. Staying focused and on task was one of my son's problems as well, and his current classroom has an aide to assist those children who need the extra reminder to keep on task. Some of the children have their own Aides full time. All children deserve the best education possible and I am sure that it is very hard for you and your son.

My sons teacher says my son is doing good all A's and a cuople of things are that he gets off track too. But when I think about it & talked to other parents what 6 yr. old is going to sit still and not talk out of turn for 6 hours @ school? NONE!!!!!!!!! Also his teacher is kind of older so I think she expects the absolute best. Next step is I would go talk to the principle and see if any one else had had problems with the teacher.

my oldest son is 9 he had trouble staying on task....with everything, we have been doing first time obedience First time only with everything.....that it was keeps my son on task at school. He is told to do something he does it. We make a list of things that my son has to check off EVERYDAY.....then he shows us......we sign off on it and then he has free time. He does what is expected of him because of us keeping him on task.......i will list his chore list to you...but keep in mind that he checks them off and we check some off we do it together...and what seems like a simple thing you do everyday is still a task they have to stay on.
- clean up dog poop
- feed dog
- take out trash
- replace bag from trash can
- clean room/loft
- bathroom stuff (brush teeth was hands)
- SHOWER
- Homework
- Read a book (14 pages)
- Homework signed
- Respectful
- Responsibile
- keep money (allowance)
- Name on board at school (good or bad)
- Games taken away
- Time outs
- Parents signature
- Did we remind you at all
Then at the bottom we write
Weekely allowance will be 5 Dollars you may earn 2 Dollars more if we dont remind you of your chores If allowance is taken away he may have the chance to earn it back. Parents are to sign this sheet everyday before bed. we love you dad & mom
THIS HAS WORKED.........he has the chance to make money be on task help more then we ask. We work together on it every week and I write notes in his lunch box to remind him we love him and he is doing great at school.............
This is what helped my son who was going through the SAME THING always has been on Honor Roll just never stayed on task
Hope this helps....my son goes to a Charter school as well....they have a strict policy on a lot of things.
With Love in my heart and tears in my eyes......I will pray for you always. xo

Hi!
First of all Welcome to the group!!!
Im Keri and I have two children. A 13 yr old son named Phaylin and a 11 yr old daughter named Caitlynn.
My son was diagnosed with ADHD and he had trouble sitting still in class. He would space off, get up and wander, and so forth since he was 2. At that age I didnt know that he had this problem. We sought advice through a Shrink (cant spell the right word) and she did a test for it. Nothing more then really just talking to him. My son is on Stratterra and it is helping. But you might want to talk with a dr that deals with children and mental health.
Tell me is your son quite bright for his age? (Ok we all think our kids are bright) My son is exceptionally smart. When he was 8 he was speaking like an adult. Not using foul language but using words that only an adult would use and he used it in the appropriate context. Just floored his Dr every time she would talk with him. What 3 yr old could tell you how a bank runs?? Mine did. Scary huh?? At 2 he learned to count in German from 1 - 10. Was reading at the age of 3. Not any novels but short kid books.
Does you son have sensitive hearing? My son does. They say that is part of the ADHD. For some reason certain sounds bother him. He has always been like that.
Have your child checked out. It will hurt him more in life later on if he wasnt looked at if he does have it. And if he DOES dont blame yourself. Use this time to help shape him into the next Albert Einstien. They believe he was ADHD.

Thanks for all the advice. I have to say I'm glad I'm not the only one who
has had this problem with thier child. His teacher talks like he is the only one in the
whole school who is giving them any trouble. Makes me feel like I'm about one inch tall.
I think I will take a coulpe of days an spend them in his class room. So I can see if it is
just him or if it is all the kids that are driving her crazy. If so I think I will have to set up
one of those meetings that was sujected. My son makes a and b's, however this week
he had been bring home papers with 70's on them. So I know something is not right. I
will talk to his doctor again after I visit his class room if I feel it is just him that she is having
trouble with. Thanks for the advice. I'm glad I've found a place to talk without feeling I am
giving my children down the road. I know we all need help once in a while. My babies are
my life. Having my son's teacher talk down about him is hard. I'm trying to support her but
I first have to surport my son. He comes home some days telling me she isn't fair. So I think
checking out his classroom should be my first step. Thanks again everyone.

I agree with everyone. It sounds like he is probably just a boy (I have a 6 year old that is totally wild). She may have a control problem with her class. I know in GA, there are way too many first year teachers that are just not tough enough yet to handle so many kids at once...Good Luck!

I agree with sitting o the classroom, although a teacher may act differently if your observing. There is a lot of good feed back on this thread. It sounds like your son is too smart for what's going on in the class. Maybe you should ask the teacher if he can keep a book in his desk, or find a school that will help your child's accelerated abilities.
