Title: Oven Bake?
Posted: 2 yearss ago

My ds is 5 and about to have a birthday, I have been listening to his remarks when all the commercials for toys come on and the one thing that he wants is an easy bake oven.  I don't mind at all and think that it's good that he wants to bake (I love to cook and see it as a science).  The hub says that it's too girlie? I want my sons to see that they can do "girlie stuff" if they want.  What do you think?

Well, as a mom of a son I think its okay. Although his dad would probably think otherwise. My oldest son, has played barbies with his sister. He has combed their hair, and my little pony's hair. And I feel its ok. His dad doesnt like it, but I see nothing wrong with it. Now if my son was showing interest in wearing makeup or barrettes or even girly clothes, then I would be worried. But your son wanting to cook, I see nothing wrong with that. Thats a good thing! Smile

I think that sounds awesome there is nothing wrong with it as long as he's happy and he's not thinking he is a girl or what not.

He is definitely a rough boy and this is the only "girlie" thing that he has shown interest in..he likes to watch me cook.  I'm making quite a good little man ; ) Now I just have to make sure that dad won't throw it away...Tongue out

Every little kid loves to help there mom cook and an easy bake oven only gives them a chance to do it themselves. Its all about independance. I personaly think you should give him one. It will give him a good experiance. You never know..... he may grow up to become a world renowned chef!!!!!!

If you feel uncomfortable with getting your son the Easy Bake Oven, then perhaps you could consider getting him his own set of cooking utensils so that he can help you and Daddy cook in the kitchen. So not only will he satisfy his craving to cook and create, but he will also be spending time with Mommy and Daddy (It's great bonding).

When I was really little, my parents got me a set of cheap mixing bowls, spoons, measuring cups, and a kids' cookbook. I swear to you, it made me feel so grown up and special. ^_^

I don't think it to be too girlie.  Little kids like and need to explore.  Baking and cooking is a great way to be creative.  But, if you are a little unsure, let him help you make a mess whipping up some cookie dough and help bake them.  My boys love that.  Not sure if they like baking or making the mess!

I just asked my husband what he thought about an oven bake for our son if we had one. He said that he would get it for him. That our son may end up being a chef or something. And that most famous chef's are men. I also don't find a problem with it.

the mixes that are made especially for the oven. .. taste awful... Or the ones we have bought anyway.. I just use reg. cake mix and brownie mix and what not and those work fine to..

I agree that there is nothing wrong with it.  I think it is a great experience for any child to appreciate cooking.  For a anyone, regardless of gender, it is important to know how to cook and to enjoy it - eating is a significant part of all our lives.  Plus, several great chefs are male.  As a parent, I also feel it is important that a child is able to express their creativity in what they are interested in.  If he is interested in cooking right now, what is the harm?  Personally I feel that not allowing him, is teaching to pass judgement in a negative way. I hope your husband has a change of heart!

1) real men can cook/bake

2) girls like men that can cook, or so I hear

3) gender separation is so 20th century! I let my girl ride and shoot...

4) cooking/baking is an excellent way (as you mentioned) to learn math and science, as well as organizational skills, how to clean the mess you make, and so on...

I bought it and it was a hit!  He made his own b-day cake and was so proud.  Thanks for the feedback!
