Title: power walking
Posted: 4 months ago

My kids (9,7 and 15 months) and I have decided to make a choice in our lives. We have decided to start walking (or riding bikes) at least 4 times a week. We have been doin it for a few days now. It gets us up off our rumps and start a healthy habit. We live about 7 blocks from a man made lake that is shaped like a S and we walk there and walk around the lake a few times (its about 1/2 mile around the lake). I have felt so good and the kids really enjoy it. I want to lose a few pounds so sweating it off is a good way. I cannot really handle very hot weather, so when it gets really hot we will probably have to walk in the evenings. I hope I will continue this. Wish me luck.

Bren,

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! How wonderful that you all are getting in some excercising!! Im sure the kids really love it too! Make sure ya all wear a helmet if they are on a bike. (sorry the EMT in me snuck out! Smile)

I am going to the gym now myself!!! It feels pretty good to go to the gym. And it is helping me in my line of work! Im trying to loose about 20lbs myself!

Awesome!  walking is a lifetime excercise.  I remember walking with my dad in the evenings when I was a kid!  It was a great memory!  Good luck on sticking to it.  I can't wait til after I recover from having this baby in a few weeks to be able to take the kids out walking, well I walk and push the stroller and they ride but we will be enjoying the outdoors none the less!

That is great. My husband this winter started a routine of running on the treadmill everyday. He comes home from work, does his warm ups and then runs 4 miles then his warm up exercises again. I myself, need to do something but lack the motivation. I have been off and on taking my dog for a walk, I ride my bike with my 8 yo, and two nights a week I play tennis for close to two hours each night. It is a blast. Not sure I will tonight due to my ankle bothering me, but I did play last night.

Walking is my favorite exercise. You can do it anywhere without gear. I like to exercise outside rather than on gym equipment. Finding a pretty place to walk is key to sticking with it.

Congratulations!! I sometimes take the kids walking to the park also. Our park is about 20 minutes from walking distance. We go back home walking. Its just hard like you say because the weather here is really bad and stuffy. That is always a good way to have yourself in shape as well as the kids. Mine don't even know thjat I do it for them to walk bukt they like it anways.

Today has been raining all day, so no walking today. I have noticed that my joints have been really achy lately, might need to lube them up. I have really been enjoying walking and spending that time with the kids.

YEAH TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY! It's so important to be active together. You are setting such a great example for your kids while at the same time making your cardiovascular system stronger and your body healthier.

You may want to invest in a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps. I love it. I make a game out of it for me. 10k steps is the equivelant of 5 miles. You would be surprised how much you walk around the house. By about 9 am I'm already at around 2,500! So 10k really is achieveable. Sounds big, but it's not.

Good luck on your walking adventure!

Walking is a great family exercise. My family walks, hikes, bikes and sometimes we go swimming. I can't swim (so- I am just standing in the water). Your kids will remember these days and look back on them. My husband and I rejoined the gym. We have been going for about 2 months and we both can tell a difference in our mood and our bodies. I want to shed 30 pounds and tone. Good luck on the walking!
