Title: potty training
Posted: 3 months ago

Rivers is 2 yr. 4 mo. and we haven't really started "training" - at least in the structure format I've visioned.  We have, over hte last several months, started talking about it and have his "potty" in the hall bath.

We have the trainers, that we use at times as the big boy diapers.  He wakes up dry all of the time, has for a long time, but just always treated the potty like a toy and that is the reason why we have not actually started training.

Over the last month we have been asking him and when going diaperless always tell him to let us know if he has to go so that he can use his potty.

Last Sunday, he told his Daddy he had to go and they went in the potty.  He has done this as couple of times now - usually his morning pee.

Yesterday, he totally held it to the point of being in pain.  Although I asked him about 4 times, even when he was saying owie, he kept telling me no.  Finally I figured out he didn't want to stop what he was doing, so I told him, it won't take long and he will have more fun if he just goes potty.  Down the hallway we went, he immediately sat down, positioned himself to be sure it went into the potty and went.  He also managed to make sure he went #2 in the potty later that night.

YEAH - I think we are ready to start making it more of the regular routine!!!!

So, two weeks ago we made the training official by having a family meeting with Rivers and making a big deal out of no more diapers.  We now are only using pull-ups or undies.

The 1st week he truly decided to exercise his independence and didn't want to sit on the potty.  The 2nd week, we are letting it be more of his idea and this seems to be working.

We are using star stickers on a chart, so everytime he goes potty we receives a stickers and we celebrate that with him.

Our 1st row of 10 stickers since the official training has started is almost full - we have 1 more to go.

He even managed to go to the potty in a public restroom at the place we ate dinner yesterday - this was huge, it took 4 trips to the bathroom to accomplish it.  The poor little guy was in so much pain because he was holding it, but he did it!

you are sooo lucky. with simon he will have days where he will tell us every time he needs to go but then we put him in undies or the cotton training pants and he ends up going in those. usally the days he decides to tell us he needs to go are days daddy is home. i need to get some stickers nd make up a chart for him the m&ms arnt cutting it anymore and he just wants them all the time, all weekend he would randomly demand m&ms we just kept telling him no m&ms you have to use your potty to get m&ms well that didnt work and it usally turned into a fit =/

Yeah, I vote we pack Simon and Addie and send to SJ's house for a while.  I'm not having any luck either.  Congrats to you though Sarah.  That's awesome.  Tell Rivers we're all proud of him.

LOL - I just got back into this forum!  Some days are better than others, that's for sure.

We seem to be on the right track at home or with Mommy & Daddy.  At school though, accidents are happening more frequently.  He will tell them, but right as he is about to go.  I need to work with both DH and the teachers on staying on top of it.

Good luck with Simon & Addie - one thing I found that is helping with us is not forcing and letting it be his idea.  When I was trying to make him just sit and try every few hours - he totally rebelled.

I just found this article about potty training.  Don't even ask me why I decided to read it, lol!  All of my kids are well past this stage, but the title of the article caught my eye.

Not even sure if this will work.  I know my children weren't trained in a day, but maybe some of the info might help.

Hi all, not sure if this is unique or not, but Amber is potty trained as long as she is not wearing any undies or training pants. She goes both in her toilet. My problem is everytime we put undies on her, she will pee or poop them. It is like she thinks they are diapers. What can I do? Also, she hasnt learned how to pull them up or down. Any suggestions?

I gotta laugh because my daughter, Lily, did the same exact thing. We had to keep a close eye on Lily and watch for any cues that she had to go. We also would remind her of her "potty-training" and ask her, "Lily, do you have to go pee-pee?" Whenever she did go in her pants, we would take her straight over to her potty and sit her down on it (without the dirty underpants on, of course). While she was sitting down, we reminded her that the pee-pee/poo-poo she left in her panties does not belong there, it belongs in the potty (where she is sitting). After a couple days, she finally got the hang of not going in her training pants/panties.

Also, make that she understands the difference between panties and diapers. In fact, you can do the same thing that we did, we used her little brother as an example ("Only babies go pee-pee/poo-poo in their pants").

As for pulling them up or down, that will come with time. You gotta encourage your daughter to try and give it her best effort everytime. Give her lots of opportunities to practice. I know that Lily is still trying to get the hang of it. She will stick her naked fanny in my face and say "Here you go Mommy", so I can pull her panties up over her rear.

Thank you. The only problem is that she gets mad at us if we try to show her how to pull her panties up and down. She thinks she knows everything....typical 2 year old going on 3. We will have to work on it. She actually does better for me than she does for Daddy...not sure why as we are doing it the same. oh well. I will have to use her brother also. Oh, did you let her sleep in diapers or did you do panties? how did that work?

Go ahead let her be independent with her panties. If this is the way she wants to figure it out, then so be it. ^_^ She will eventually catch on, I'm sure of it.

We actually let Lily sleep/nap in diapers. We're going to let her master potty-training in the daytime so we will eventually be able to train her for night-time potty breaks.

I hope everything works out with your little one. ^_^

Hey!  Looks like all of our girls are going through potty training at the moment.  Our issue is that we can't get her to go poop in the potty.  She's in panties all day and she'll just hold it every day until naptime so that she can go in the daiper.  One day she even just didn't go because we skipped the nap that day.  I feel like the only thing that I could do is put her down in panties but that would probably be a huge mess everywhere (shudders...).  I talk to her everyday about it, but she's always been slow to change.  Any suggestions?
