Title: Moving on to real food....
Posted: 11 months ago

So my son is now 9 and 1/2 months and a few weeks ago we started to experiment with him feeding himself the Gerber puffs, cheerios, and then feeding him gerber graduate meals, etc.  HE LOVES IT... so much that he won't do baby food anymore for anything. I am ok with that because it makes it easier (and cheaper)  So my question is what are some good and healthy meals for little teeny ones to start with.  He had a waffle (with no syrup) for breakfast and loved it.  I am not particular about a lot of things with him but I do want him to have a good healthy relationship with food.

My daughter is under weight so my ped told me to give her higher calorie food an table foods. She is almost 9 months.  Once i gave her table food she wants nothing to do with anything from a jar hehe. SHe loves eggs, chicken, mash, bananas, greenbeans, pretty much anything she can get her hands on. You can probably give him what ever you guys are eating just make sure its not a choking hazard( I love the bullet) an that there are no allergies.  Cool

I also do the same thing with my 8 month old (almost 9 months...) and she loves table food. I still give her baby food, but she would rather have table food. And its normally whatever we are eating as a family, I watch out for things like nuts, berries, oils, sodium, sugars, (no hotdogs!) ect... Stay away from things a baby shouldnt have. Just go with your gut. (pun intented) lol, Keep doing what your doing. Smile

I do have a question for you guys....??? How much formula/breastmilk do you guys still give your little one? I find that I still give her a lot still. Atleast 20-26oz a day! My daughter weighs 21lbs almost 22lbs. Is that too much?

Lissamomy- I give Gabriel 8 oz for breakfast and 8 before bed.  the othe meals/snacks he gets either juice or water. The dr said that since he was growing good, the he did not need all formula anymore.  Its good and saves us $ too!!!

I've been concerned about the same thing...giving my lil' one healthy foods. I give him wild caught fish (not farmed apparently that has too whoch mercury), avacados, chicken, steamed veggies...he loves them steamed with basil. Also, I love those little star pasta noodles with tomato sauce, cheese crumbles, yogart, cottage cheese, whole wheat breads (I guess whole wheat is better than just wheat?! I never knew there was a difference but thats just what i read) Easton loves blueberries and watermelon too. I found turkey dogs are nice and easy when your in a rush and also they make that sliced chicken that isn't as processed as a turkey dog. I love all the morning star foods too especially because my lil' guy doesn't always want to eat his veggies. Uncle bens rice is always a quick thing to make too that is healthy! It's so easy for them to eat too!

There is this book called Baby Let's Eat by Rena Coyle. It is fabulous. Not only does it provide healthy recipes, broken down into age groups, it also suggests weekly menus based on those recipes. The 6-12 month stuff suggested is mostly puree stuff, but some examples from the 12-18 month age group are  Zucchini Pizza Strips, Brown Rice Salad, Eggplant and Cheese Stacks, Garden Gazpacho, etc.

Also, I agree with Easton's Mommy, Morningstar products are great for when you're in a rush.

Good luck! Teaching healthy eating habits is so important, but looking our for all the bad stuff is really a pain!

Great reference Katiecs! I also wanted to suggest a book called "First Meals" by Annabel Karmel. It's a recipe book that it is broken down into age brackets up to 7 years old. It explains the importance of different vitamins and minerals in a child's diet and realy helps to clear some fog on the whole process of baby food to "real food". ^_^

I LOVE this book and use it all of the time, especially for the nutrional information.  While I understand good nutrition and meal planning, this book was essential for me to understand it from my childs perspective.  it even gives great tips on eating habits by stage.

We give Rivers lots of veggies, fruit, fish and feed him our meals as much as possible.

I try to avoid packaged food as much as possible, keeping that for whole wheat Mac & Cheese, Apple Sauce, and breakfast sausages.

The rest, we prepare ourselves and are big users of tupperware for storage and easy heating.  I'll make fresh stuff each night (or 2 nights on, 1 night off) for dinner and this gives us a variety of easy heat up foods for a couple a of days.  As one is rotating off, another is rotating in.

We started feeding both of our boys what we were eating from the table.  They both really enjoyed the mashed potatos and both of them are big veggie eaters.  Daniel loved eating chicken that was chopped up really fine.  I am having a hard time getting Jacob to eat anykind of meat.  Trying expermenting with different types of soft foods that you prepare at dinner time.
