Title: Anti-Social
Posted: 11 months ago

My brother has a little girl and she is a little over 3 yrs old..  She goes to Pre-school for 6 hrs everyday..  Lately she has become anti-social....  She would rather be in her room alone watching tv or playing but ALONE.  My bro's GF is concerned about it and my dd is not that old yet so we haven't crossed this path yet..   I guess my Question is; Is this normal??  What should they do??  Any advice will help..  She doesn't seem depressed or anything just wants to be by herself..

Thanks In advance

I guess I would ? if she is being social at preschool if she is she just might want some private time-I think that is okay.  My ds after preschool will be up in his room for a little bit by himself and i let him- if she is not being social at preschool that might be a red flag

Coulb be  wind down time  indeed  or the Proverbial red flag  Has she changed in other ways also? Hard to tell   and sometimes we forget  that kids are just lil people  and go thru times  of just happily wanting to play alone and dream, imagine  etc.... just watch   look and listen  carefully is my  thoughts  She will let you know whats going on

Hi.

My question is this... Has she ever been like this before?? Have you spoken to her teacher at school?

I was a quiet child and prefered to be alone like this. But I had a reason. I didnt know it until I was 19 and my parents told me that I was put up for adoption when I was born. Also found out that from the time I was given up until I was placed for adoption I went through 9 different foster homes. So I was terrified of people. Im still bothered by too many people. I wanted to be alone but yet not alone as a child. Id spend hours by myself and be happy as long as my Mom was on the other side of the house.

I have a three year old also. I have noticed she goes through cycles of behavior like that. She'll be super interested in others and playing and school and then sometimes she get COMPLETELY obssessed with some new toy or make believe game (or lately its the My Little Pony Movie), and she'll want to be up in her room for hours or if I would let her parked in front of that silly DVD, not wanting to go anywhere or do anything.

I am totally comfortable with this behavior in my child, it suits her personality and its not a drastic departure from things I would see in her as a baby. By that I mean, she's an intensely focused little kid sometimes and even as little as before two years old she would become preoccupied with something and want to be by herself with it until she a. figured it out or b. got bored of it.

I guess (in my opinion) the question that needs to be asked it, does it suit the child's personality or is this behavior beyond weird. If it is a big change, or unlike anything they've seen before maybe they should look more into it, but if it's just an intensification of a pattern they have perhaps seen in the past, I think at three kids really start to want some independance and maybe even personal, alone time.
