My 16 month old daughter had croup the week before Christmas, she has been give 2 perscriptions for a steroid, 5 days each, and still can't seem to get rid of that cough. She wakes up coughing and choking through the night about 2 to 3 times and it's exausting. My husband has asthma so we don't know if it's that or if its a sinus infection. We have an appointment in the morning but I just wanted to know if anyone else has gone through this.

We have been finding the same thing, at night I swear one more cough like that and he will be throwing up...so hard and there is nothing that works so far..my doctor thinks its allergies..and since we don't want to do antibotic for just the lingering nighttime cough..(thought leftover from cold that lasted forever) So we are trying a nose spray..when they lay down at night, the nasal passage is dripping into his throat and making him cough.., so blocked ears..needs tubes, and hes a 'mouth breather' and long lasting colds..all the sinus area, and all gumming eachother up.. so the ear, nose and throat are all helping make him rundown and now has shiners under his eyes, poor guy!! I hope that it won't last long, and cool rooms help the cough i find...if its croup, take them out in the cold air and if it stops..its croup (usually the cough clears up enroute to hospital when its a bad croup cough due to the cold opens the airways..my sister has proven that theroy right 3 times so far...and doctor send her home again with another medication..again) So try a cool mist machine too..it seems to be working the most..

Posted: 12 months ago We are doing the cool mist humidifier, proped up bed, vicks on feet and chest, and cracked window at night. I have a weird feeling that it something else. She had an ear infection 2 weeks before the croup so I don't know if that's still lingering. Who knows!

It sounds like there is very likely something else going on, whether sinus, allergies, asthma, etc. I know both of the kids had croup before, but I can't really remember much right now. But I'm pretty sure it didn't last that long. I wish you the best, and you will be in my prayers! "I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth." -Psalm 57:9-11.

I just wanted to say that I also added a prayer for Sidnie in the Call on Jesus group forum. Hang in there! "I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth." -Psalm 57:9-11.

Posted: 12 months ago My daughter had croup once before and no the cough didn't last that long. A couple of days at most. I agree with everyone else about seeing the doc. Well good luck and hope the little one feels better soon.

Croup is just a barking, dry cough. There is no medication for it, except a one time shot, not sure what it is. No cough medicine or any med will help it. If they get in a coughing fit step out in the cold air until they calm down. The first night of croup is the worst and each night after gets better. usually only last 3-5 nights. My son usually gets croup every Fall and Spring. I feel I have become a pro at it. lol

My son suffered from what all the doctors insisted was just frequent bouts of croup for several years. Finally, we found the problem....allergies and asthma....apparently asthma is hereditary, or so we were told. The doctors had always asked if anyone in our family had asthma...my hubby and I always said "no". As it turned out, my mother in law has had asthma for 30 years! Guess boys don't pay to much attention to their mothers! Less is BEST!

I had croup when i was young... I was diagnosed with it at the age of 6.. I was perscribed something and it didn't really seem to help.. First thing every morning for about 3 yrs my mom boiled a pot of water and I had to stand over it with towel over my head... I think you could probably get the same effect if you have a hot humidifier or just turn the water on hot in your shower and close the door.. I don't know if you have tried this or not but it helped for me.. I had croup off and on until i was 18.. good luck... Oh yeah about the asthma I would express you concern with you pediatritian. I know there are some tests they can do to tell..

A few times a year for weeks at a time, he coughs morning noon and night and we have tried so many cough meds.....both prescription and OTC. Doctor said he has asthma but the meds didn't keep him from coughing. It makes me feel so helpless, nothing I do seems to help. I pray and pray that he grows out of it. He is very miserable that time and his body wears out fast. Stop and look how miraculous God is by the colors of the season.

Thank's everyone for the help, you are all so quick to reply! Well we had her appointment today and turns out she has ear infections in both ears! The doc. said it doesn't sound like the croup anymore so thank god that is done. He put her on antibiotics for 10 day's and said that should start to help her. This is her second round of ear infections, she had that 2 weeks before the croup. It just seems that her immune system is weak, I have started to give her echinacea drops and am hoping that will help build her system. Thank's again for the thoughts and prayers.

This is a nasty time of year with all the sickness and all the germs going around. I know you have heard it a 1000 times but I believe it with all my heart........have everyone wash their hands alot, especially after using the restroom. Wash your hands after changing a diaper......wash before you prepare food. Sanitize toys. Kill the germies!!!!!!!!! Stop and look how miraculous God is by the colors of the season.

When my babies were infants we lived in Wyoming, 100 miles from a hospital. I called my doctor late one night in a panic about croup. He suggested a hot, steamy bathroom to open up airways, then bundle them up in a sleeping bag so only the face is exposed. Take them out into the freezing night air to breathe deeply. Sounds crazy, but the croupy cough stopped immediately! Estella
