Title: QoD - Smoking Bans

Each state's laws on smoking are probably a little different, but it seems that most places now are non-smoking, even in bars and casinos in many places, which is the one complaint many smokers have. If you're a non-smoker, it's really a non-issue for you, but for smokers, they have reason to gripe sometimes.

I have been a smoker in the past- but I do not smoke now.  Now  we are made aware of the effect that smoking has not just on the smoker but the non smoker. I live in near Madison were there is a cidy-wide ban even in bars.  Although I think it is important for buisnesses to be aware of effects of smoking I don't think the goverment should interfere.  Let each buisness decide  that.  Smoking is a bad habit-and it is one you have for life.  5 years without one and every once in awhile, stress induced, I crave one.  If this was a perfect world I would outlaw smoking.  We just have to use all our efforts in keep people from starting that nasty habit!

As a smoker, ex non smoker, and soon to be non smoker again  Ive done both sides of the issue. As the government  has supported  the cig companies for so  long ,and the tobacco industry as a whole  I think its RIDICULOUS  to  do all the bans...  yet   for myself I think it IS  helping me in my decision to just end it again   once for all.... I HATE smoking  , it makes me feel ashamed and  like an addict  sets bad examples  and smells bad besides...

I am a nonsmoker and I have asthma.  With the smoking ban now in place, I can actually go places.  Before I could go for a few minutes, then I couldn't breathe.  As far as I'm concerned its the greatest.

However, I know the clinic I used to work for had a smoking ban on the campus.  They even banned smoking in your own car if it was in the parking lot.  I feel that was going a bit too far.

I am a non-smoker and so is my hubby.  I enjoy that restaurants are now smoke free, but do feel that there should be some designated location for smokers.

Just because I don't like it, doesn't mean that those that do shouldn't enjoy the priviledge of indulging if they want. It is a personal choice. Smile

(not exactly sure what the QOD IS......it seems to not be stated exactly anymore for some reason)  but I am posting as others have in the thread

I smoked a couple cigs back in the day only when drinking but never liked it so I was never considered a smoker.

My mom, on the other hand, is and always has been a chain smoker.  Let me just say that living with her while growing up in a tiny attic apartment was not good with the smoking.

My clothes ALWAYS smelled like cigarettes and I wasn't the one smoking!  So I am in favor of the non-smoking act being put in place in public.

If you, as a smoker want to breath in that smoke and suck it into YOUR lungs in the privacy of your own home OR outside where it isn't creeping into my face while I'm eating a nice dinner with my family at a restaurant, that's just fine with me.

But I prefer to keep my lungs smoke free and my kids as well.

My uncle died at age 39----LUNG CANCER.  I was 10 when that happened and I remember what he looked like in the hospital to this very day.

I don't smoke I think its nasty. Reality is that they can try to baned all this smoking in public places but people are still going to do it. I say that I agree with not smoking anywhere near kids. Parks, Schools, In the car, Amusement Parks, In the house.

Something funy I forgot to add. I once went to visit someone at the hospital and you would think that it being a hospital and everyone talking about cigarrets and health problems they would not allow smoking outside. I saw a cubical outside the hospital and about four people smoking in there. You could hardly see the people in there all you saw was smoke how sick is that!

As an ex smoker, I am delighted about the smoking ban - I love being able to go out to eat and not coming home smelling like an old nasty cigarette.

However, also being an exsmoker - if I still smoked, I would be furious if I had to go outside to have a fix.  Especially in the cold states, it is cold enough here in AZ at times - it would be enough to make me quit.  We go to a sports bar for lunch at work several times a month - and it is so nice to go back to work smelling normal instead of like smoke.  They place had smoke eaters - but those things are about worthless.

i think its stupid. we used to go out and hang out with our friends somewhere all nite usually at rockbottom in the bar area now if we go we have to try and get 1 of 4 smoking tables that are on the patio (the others are to close to the door) or we eat and end up hanging out in the parking lot for a bit then leaving. i feel sorry for the places that completely closed off the smoking area (places in chandler) to meet smoking codes for their city then the statewide bill passed and they could no longer use their smoking area wasted money. we no longer hang out anywhere anymore we stay home all the time now they dont want you to be able to smoke in your car if a kid is in the car with you sorry if they want to pay my car payment and insurance then they can tell me what i can and cannot do in my car. im sick and tired of this lame state its becoming more and more a police run state.

Im sorry  that you are mad and feel this way but they are not doing it to put smokers down they are doing it for the health. They probably see too many people dying of smoke. I understand that for some its a habit they can't get rid of and for them its a part of life but what about the children that have asthma or the newborns that are in cars or houses and have relatives smoking around them. I think adult are old enough to take care of themselves but what about the little ones that don't know how dangerous smoke is. I rather see smokers find a way to smoke thatn the kids or adults that cant tolerate it for health problems be in hospitals or dying of it.

 smoking is a civil liberity....

I was always a condsiderate smoker... never in front of kids or in places where ppl were eatting only if it was a bar... which drinking and smoking go hand and hand.

i just dont like the fact that governments city, state or fed... can take rights away like this.

we actually give them away by not voting.... or for some voting in favor of the bans...

in ohio... a business owner is aloud to make his establishment a private club so as long as its not conected to another business... he can charge 1 cent for a membership and then his patrons and employees are allowed to somke. the non smokers are welcome too buy membership but can not do anything about the smoke. here in my home town alot of the bars are doing that.

I'm not a smoker, although I have friends and family who are.  I don't think smokers should be treated as second-class citizens. As long as people are not blowing smoke in the faces of others, I think it's everyone's right to choose their poison. We're all going to die of something anyway. Apparently, smoking brings great pleasure to some people. I have tried it and didn't like it, although when I was 16 I thought I looked cool holding a cigarette out the window when I drove.  Smoking, unlike drinking or drug addictions, does not impact other people as long as the smoker is considerate and goes outside to smoke. I'm all for protecting people from secondhand smoke. It seems that if all smokers were considerate people, we wouldn't have to involve the government and create bans.  I remember the days when people would come to the house and ask, "Do you mind if I smoke?" Since I have asthma, I do mind, but I prefer the civility of asking rather than the self-righteous attitude of people who view smoking as a criminal offense. I think bars and restaurants should have a closed-off section for smokers as smoking goes along with eating and drinking for most people. I hate the judgmental attitude of many non-smokers toward smokers. Some of my favorite people are smokers, and I don't love them any less for it.
