Tis' the season for seeing family and for people putting there 2 cents on how to raise your kids.  i.e.  I have a family member who is good for that.  At 18 months both my children are/were very clingy-therefore she tells me/my kids in a sing-songy way "gotta get you away from mommy a couple of days"  I smile but then think are you volenteering cuz if your not keep your yap shutSmile.  How do you deal with  these situations????

first I would say at this stage in development is for normal for most kids to be clingy between 18months and then 3..than I'd reallly offer the kid to her...say hey next weeek end we need a sitter i'll drop her off.Smile

I just love it when people offer their well intentioned advice. Tongue out LOL!

Sometimes it is not appreciated, especially by those whom have no children, but think they can parent a child better than you. LOL!  I always know they mean well, smile, and thank them for their advice.  Then I just do what I do best....be my children's Mom!  Smile

I always love the statement, if they were my kids.  Really - do you see how yours either. . . a)your kids turned out, b) you kids act, or c) did/do you even have any kids. . .

I do the best I can at raising my kids and if anyone wants to comment on it and think they can do a better job, come spend a day in my shows. . . .

OH I feel your pain!  I don't see my family on the holidays but usually sporatic trips throughout the year.  My in laws are constantly offering advice which my mom has always told me to thank them but do as I intended to do anyway.  However, i get the advice every single visit, without fail, which is multiple times a week.  When the advice is coming from my SIL who does not have any children, the advice gets old, really really quick.  I have learned to just give a smile and not say a word....because...my mom also said "IF YOU CAN"T SAY ANYTHING NICE DON"T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL"  at least i listened partially!!!

lol I like that- taking them up on their "offer".  It can be really annoying when everyone has the "perfect" advice to "fix" your child.  Just try to politely acknowledge what they said ("That's interesting", "I hadn't though about that", "Our pediatrician told us....", etc.) or just smile and nod and know that you are a good mom and nobody knows your children better than you. Smile

And it's true that you cannot make judgements about another mom or her kids until you have been in her situation.  During Timothy's first year, we had so many issues, particularly with non-stop blood-curdling screaming.  Our ped said that he probably just has a negative temperament.  I know that no parent wants to think that about their child, but I knew that wasn't the case (we definitely know now that he is a happy little dude).  My neighbor and good friend was sympathetic but secretly thought we must be doing something wrong....until they had #3 and faced almost the same issues.  She finally understood what we were dealing with....namely, a child that really despised being a baby and needed to be grown up and able to walk and speak.  Now they are both very happy and fun.  But yeah, until other people have been in your shoes, they don't really know.

i havent had to much problems with ppl giving me advice lately when simon was born i got tons of advice though since he wouldnt stop crying, the thing i heard the most was its ok to let him cry its not going to hurt him but they wouldnt listen when i would tell them that he will cry nonstop for hours on end. that ended up being acid reflux and once he was on meds he was a different baby. after dealing with torticollis and the doc band ppl really stopped giving advice since they had no clue about that stuff and never had heard or seen anyone dealing with it. the last advice i got was from my dad when i told him that i think simon might have a ear infection he asked if he was tugging at his ears i said no he said well he doesnt have a ear infection then, took him in to the doctors double ear infection and pretty bad even the doctor was surprised that he wasnt tugging at his ears and that he would laugh when you messed with his ears.
