Title: Any thoughts on tummy troubles?
Posted: 1 years ago

My 5 week old is constipated. We're just past 48 hours. The doc said that we don't worry until 72 hours. But its quickly approaching with no change a very unhappy baby. It worries me because this is the 2nd time in 2 weeks and she is breastfed so her stool is always loose anyways. Somebody help please. I"ve tried the tummy massage, the bicycle legs, and trying to take her temperature rectally to give her a "little nudge". That worked last time, but not now.  Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

OK Rach What are YOU eating thats  about same as last time? thats first question. Are you eating some good fiberous stuff?   Have you tried drinking prune juice to  hope it gets into milk? How about a bottle w warm water and few drops of corn syrup added? Try a tiny bit of Sweetwater as its  called  is OLDEST remedy known to Me  and all our grans used on us  try a few drops from a dropper, i have also maple when  out of corn, ........ something in the syrup seems to loose it.... love you   holly  and call me OK

Antygamma hit all of the points...

I'd look at your diet and H2o intake - common trends may help figure out why it is happening and what you can adjust to prevent.

But that may not help the current situation - I would try just a little H2o - always was told to add sugar, but that was just for the taste to get the kids to like water.  We never had a problem with Rivers not liking water - drinks non-stop, we planned to only add a little sugar as a last resort. It can't hurt your little one to have some water between feedings & a few ounces should not impact appetite.

Prune juice works wonders too, but may still be too young, so I would wait to see what Dr. has to say.

At that age give her 2 oz of prune or pear juice. Gabriel did the exact same thing but he went a whole week without going. His tummy was hard and he cried in pain all the time. i had to stop breastfeeding and go onto formula, but I hope the juice works.

When mine were small my next door neighbor (she was German, from the old school) taught me to warm some water - and give it to her in a bottle - if she takes a bottle.  Even just a couple tablespoons helped, and the warmth felt good on her tummy.  It's old-fashioned and simple.

And, there's my mother-in-law who swore by setting babies on top of a towel on a  warm dryer - between the warmth and the gentle rocking sometimes they'd be soothed.

Good luck - and get enough water yourself!

To this day, my Grams drinks a warm cup of water EVERYDAY to keep her regular.  She swears by it's effectiveness.

Best wishes.Smile

I noticed that when my little ones have been constipated adding a TON of fruit to my own diet seemed to help. I hope your little one's feeling better soon.

I have a 12 week old and we have been through all the belly troubles there is I think.  In addition to examining your diet, my pediatrician suggested taking a heating blanket and putting it on my belly, then a thin blanket, the put the baby on my belly and snuggling some.  The warmth of the blanket I guess was supposed to work.  ALthough we never had to try it because eventually everything worked out it may be worth a try???  Good luck!!
