A New Town
by Lisa's Pieces
Happy 4th of July, MommyTalkers! I hope you all enjoy your holiday and long weekend.
How many times have you moved around in your life? As an adult? When you have to take care of telling EVERYBODY!!! You have to remember to tell every soul you know and/or might try to contact you that you've moved... and, extra special, when you're moving a considerable difference, you have to change doctors/veterinarians/dentists. It helps to get copies of your records to bring with your new doctor, whom you don't know yet of course because you have nobody to tell you who's good in your insurance plan.
Yes, moving is a pain in the ass for adults, isn't it? Sometimes for kids it's a great thing! Maybe you've been renters all your life (like yours truly) and you're moving into your first new home (like yours truly in about seven weeks). For kids (and adults) that's exciting. Your first home is memorable. Some kids are born into theirs, but some kids, like mine, are going to experience moving into it. Though I don't know if at 4 and 2, they'll remember much of moving (or our apartment now). My daughter is excited to finally get her own room and not have to share with her brother, although they're both going to be sad in actuality. They like each other's company. If my daughter isn't in her bed when my son wakes up, he gets his little feet out of his toddler bed and starts calling for her. They play together all day long!
For them, the anxiety will be having strange rooms and being alone in them. I expect their first few nights there to be tough. Eventually, when they've settled in, it'll be very peaceful - it's a much quieter town than where we are now.
I, on the other hand, am preparing for what should be an unbelievably painful first few nights. In addition to my two young children who have to adjust to a move, my two cats have to adjust to a move... and so does my dog. Three animals that have to endure first, the car ride, and then the moving in, the sniffing everywhere, the growling, the howling and/or crying at night. Oh, the joy we are going to experience.
As for me and my husband, it means new neighbors; new streets to learn; new shops to visit; a new school district and local events/sports/clubs. It's a whole new world for us - one that we are beyond ready for. We picked a good town. With good schools... and low taxes. About an hour from New York City now, as opposed to about 20 minutes from it, but I rarely go and when I do, it won't matter if it's an hour. The drive is all highway or there's a train station right in the new town that goes right into Manhattan.
Hopefully we'll be good friends and neighbors to the people of Budd Lake, New Jersey. We hope to be part of the community for awhile. My husband I grew up in the same small town, and even though we weren't friends at the time, we've known each other since I was in the 3rd grade and he was in the 5th. Growing up with a sense of community is nice. We want our kids to experience it too.
