Working Moms

Making the Right Decision

by Diane Lang

I know this column is dedicated to the "Working Mom" but what if you are at the point in your life where you are not sure if going back to work is the right thing. It's a hard decision to make. So, think about why you want to go back to work- Is it out of financial need? Divorce? Empty nest? Do you want a career or a job?

Take a look at your motivation by answering the following questions. Be honest with yourself. Remember, it's natural to have a mix of feelings and emotions as you consider a change this important to you and your family. Going back to work is a HUGE transition and should be carefully considered.

Thinking Questions:

1. Is going back to work right for you? Why?

There are a few things you need to think about when answering this question. What type of job do you want? Do you want a job or a career? There is a big difference between the two. A job is a means to an end - a paycheck, benefits, etc. A career is something you feel passionate about, it creates a sense of purpose and happiness in your life. A job can be temporary but a career is a life changing event.

2. Will having a second job ( the first being a mom) make you the best mom you can be?

Being a mom is a full-time job! Just because we don't get a paycheck and W-2, doesn't mean it's not real work. It's the most important job in the world. We work 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. I don't remember getting a paid sick or vacation day- do you? We are on-call all the time. Someone is always depending on us. This is a lot of hard work and responsibility. Are you ready for more?

3. Will getting a job allows you to have the life you want? What kind of lifestyle do you want?

What will make your life complete? Is it more money for travel, luxuries, material items? Is it the social aspect/the adult company? Is it having another sense of purpose and fulfillment besides being a mom? For me, working outside the home provides a nice mix/balance for me. This is not for everyone. Make sure your job fits into your lifestyle.

4. What kind of job do you want? Does it fit your value system?

If you sacrifice your values, you will never be happy. Your job should align with your values because only then will you feel a sense of happiness with your balance of work and family. The company should also be a family friendly company to match your family values, if that is what you desire.

5. Is it financially feasible?

This is a question that you really need to consider. I have worked with moms, that it cost more to go to work then to stay home. The cost of daycare, transportation, lunch, wardrobe, etc was more then they were making? Make sure to consider today's gas prices, the cost of daycare and a new wardrobe plus lunch and any other outside expenses.

6. You will be adding another role to your life- are you ready?

Do you know who you are? Do you feel secure in your identity? You must be secure with yourself before you add "employee" to your already long list of titles like Mom, Wife, Sister, Friend, driver, PTA mom, etc.

This is a few of the questions.... Please start thinking about these questions and I will finish it up in the next Working Mom column. Please feel free to write me with any questions or comments at:
